In the present study, an innovative cold plasma treatment was used as a tool to fortify the white rice. The amounts of ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid were optimized for improving the bioavailability of iron. White rice samples were treated with plasma at a constant voltage of 20 kV for varying time (10 min and 15 min). The exposure time of plasma was selected based on the surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in the characteristics of hydrophilicity, surface energy, cooking time and hardness of plasma-treated rice. Plasma treated rice was fortified with the optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid solution. Optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid per 100 g of rice (862.93 mg and 1398.27 mg) were found by conducing experiments using Central Composite Design of Response Surface Methodology. Further, rice was blended with untreated rice in the ratio of 1:100 and 1:200 and was packed in LDPE and PP pouches and was stored at ambient temperature for further storage analysis. The in vitro bioavailability of iron was significantly higher in the plasma-treated fortified rice at both 1.35 and 7.5 pH than in the control sample, and plasma treatment significantly reduced the rate of oxidation of iron during storage.

The Ir-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of acyclic aromatic N-aryl imines with Josiphos-type binaphane ligands has been described. Under the optimized conditions, a wide range of imines were hydrogenated to afford the corresponding chiral amines in high yields (up to 94%) and good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to > 99% ee). With an intention of identifying chalcone derivatives exhibiting anti-protozoal activity, a cohort of relatively unexplored arylpyrrole-based chalcone derivatives were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The resultant compounds were evaluated in vitro for their potential activity against a cultured Trypanosoma brucei brucei 427 strain. Several compounds displayed mostly modest in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity with compounds 10e and 10h emerging as active candidates with IC50 values of 4.09 and 5.11 mu M, respectively. More importantly, a concomitant assessment of their activity against a human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cell line revealed that these compounds are non-toxic.

The efficient preparation of nitrile-containing building blocks is of interest due to their utility as synthetic intermediates and their prevalence in pharmaceuticals. As a result, significant efforts have been made to develop methods to access these motifs which rely on safer and non-toxic sources of CN. Herein, we report that 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanenitrile is an efficient, non-toxic, electrophilic CN source for the synthesis of nitrile-bearing quaternary centers by a thermodynamic transnitrilation and anion-relay strategy. This one-pot process leads to nitrile products resulting from the gem-difunctionalization of alkyl lithium reagents.

This work presents a highly active and reusable heterogeneous film catalytic assembly for hydrogenation reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. The multilayer structures of PEI-(K2PdCl4-P1)(n)-film (PEI = polyethylenmine, P1 = 3-amino-3-(4-pyridinyl)-propionitrile) bound to quartz slides were fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method. Various characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma OES spectrometer (ICP), UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were employed to reveal the growth process of the resulting LbL multilayers in detail. Subsequent in situ reduction by H-2 produced Pd nanoparticles embedded in such films were used as catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. The catalytic performance test shows that the thin film catalyst can be applied to the hydrogenation reaction of various substituted nitroaromatics, and exhibits good catalytic activity and good catalyst stability. It is worth mentioning that our catalytic films can be easily removed from the reaction system in any time during the reaction, and the catalytic activity could be fully recovered when reused directly in another catalytic cycle for five times.

Mono- or di-substituted imidazole derivatives were synthesized using a one-pot, two-step strategy. All imidazole derivatives were tested for AChE and BChE inhibition and showed nanomolar activity similar to that of the test compound donepezil and higher than that of tacrine. Structure activity relationship studies, docking studies to on X-ray crystal structure of AChE with PDB code 1B41, and adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) predictions were performed. The synthesized core skeleton was bound to important regions of the active site of AChE such as the peripheral anionic site (PAS), oxyanion hole (OH), and anionic subsite (AS). Selectivity of the reported test compounds was calculated and enzyme kinetic studies revealed that they behave as competitive inhibitors, while two of the test compounds showed noncompetitive inhibitory behavior. ADME predictions revealed that the synthesized molecules might pass through the blood brain barrier and intestinal epithelial barrier and circulate freely in the blood stream without binding to human serum albumin. While the toxicity of one compound on the WS1 (skin fibroblast) cell line was 1790 mu M, its toxicity on the SH-SY5Y (neuroblastoma) cell line was 950 mu M.

We prepared high-performance aromatic copolyamides, containing bithiazole and thiazolo-thiazole groups in their main chain, from aromatic diamines and isophthaloyl chloride, to further improve the prominent thermal behavior and exceptional mechanical properties of commercial aramid fibers.
