The use of ubiquities elements such as iron instead of expensive precious metals as catalysts is one goal toward realizing environmentally benign synthetic chemistry. Here, we report that porous FeO(OH) dispersed on Mg-Al hydrotalcite acts as a bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst in the one-pot synthesis of 2-substituted quinoline derivatives through dehydrogenative oxidation-cyclization reactions. The catalyst was prepared by a simple grafting method using FeCl3 and Mg-Al hydrotalcite. The prepared porous FeO(OH) possesses a higher surface area than those previously reported for alpha-FeO(OH) particles. The one-pot quinoline synthesis proceeded effectively under non-noble-metal catalysis in air without requiring additional homogeneous bases or solvents.

Elemental sulfur, as a by-product of petroleum refining, is regarded as a solid waste stored in above-ground deposits due to limited existing applications, meanwhile, mercury contamination is one of the current environmental issues considering its high toxicity to the human, and how to safely dispose of hazardous waste adsorbents is still an unavoidable problem. This study addresses these need by utilizing sulfur for preparation of a polysulfide complex material to capture Hg(II) and convert the Hg(II)-containing spent adsorbent into a catalyst. Initially, the mesoporous silica was prepared and functionalized by using diatomite and APTES, then, an in-situ preparation method was applied to obtain the amine-mesoporous silica/poly(m-aminothiophenol) nanocomposite (MAP), subsequently sulfur was copolymerized with MAP and vinylic-potato starch through inverse vulcanization, forming the sulfur crosslinked polymers composite cp(MAP-S-PS). Many characterizations were employed to determine the physicochemical structure andmorphology of cp(MAP-S-PS). The adsorption study showed the cp(MAP-S-PS) exhibited the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 436.68 mg/g, good regeneration performance after 5 cycles and excellent selectivity between Hg(II) ions and common cations. Furthermore, the collected spent adsorbent cp (MAP-S-PS)/Hg(II) was reused as a catalyst for synthesis of acetophenone with 89% yield, and most of phenylacetylene derivatives were also transformed to corresponding acetophenone in good yields. A new Fe(II) Schiff base complex anchored on mont-K10 (Fe@imine-mont-K10) was synthesized and extensively characterized by FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDX, TEM, ESR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET surface area measurement, solid state Si-29 NMR and ICP-AES analysis. The catalytic activity of the complex was investigated for hydrogenation of ketones. The results indicated that it exhibited good catalytic activity for hydrogenation of aromatic as well as aliphatic ketones in i-PrOH/CH3CN (1:1) using Na-i-OPr as base at 80 degrees C resulting in moderate to excellent isolated yields (51-99%) of their corresponding products. An efficient and facile approach has been described for the synthesis of a new series of 1-amino-2-oxo-nicotinonitriles and their sulfonamides under microwave and ultrasonic irradiation. The desired compounds 4 a-l were obtained via condensation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde, aryl or heteroaryl methyl ketone and cyanoacetohydrazide in the presence of catalytic piperidine under three synthetic methodologies (namely, conventional method, ultrasonic and microwave irradiation), the best results (short reaction times, pure products, high yield) were obtained by ultrasonic irradiation. Sulfonamides 5 a-f resulted via reaction of amines 4 a-e and 4 j with benzene sulfonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. The synthesized compounds give no significant results when investigated against Gm (+ve) and Gm (-ve) bacteria, and fungi strains.

A visible-light-promoted synthesis of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones has been developed using 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium perchlorate as an organo-photocatalyst. The atmosphere-controlled method (Ar/air) enabled the selective synthesis of hydroxyl- and acyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones under mild reaction conditions without the use of any metal catalysts or toxic reagents. A fluorescent labelling experiment showed that hydroxyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones may have utility in various biological applications as potent fluorophores.

A simple and efficient microwave-assisted protocol has been developed for the synthetic of a series of novel pyrazole-indanone hybrid analogs. The target compounds have been synthesized by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of different 1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehydes with 2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one in the presence of potassium hydroxide. The compounds were characterized by IR,H-1 and(13)C NMR, and mass spectra and were found to exhibit potent antimicrobial activity in vitro.

An efficient continuous flow process for the synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles is described. The process involves the reaction between a polymer-supported triorganotin azide and organic nitriles. The polymer-supported organotin azide, which is in situ generated with a polystyrene-supported triorganotin alkoxide and trimethylsilylazide, is immobilized in a packed bed reactor. This approach is simple, fast (it takes from 7.5 to 15 min), and guarantees a low concentration of tin residues in the products (<5 ppm). The selective hydrogenation of the nitro moiety is a difficult task in the presence of other reducible functional groups such as alkenes or alkynes. We show that the carbon-based (metal-free) catalyst can be used to selectively reduce substituted nitro groups using H-2 as a reducing agent, providing a great potential to replace noble-metal catalysts and contributing to simple and greener strategies for organic synthesis.
