A new rhodium(III) triphenylphosphine complex having the general formula [Rh(PPh3)(2)(L)Cl] (1) was synthesized by C-S bond cleavage of an ONS donor azo-thioether ligand (L-CH2Ph). The complex was thoroughly characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Its single crystal X-ray structure exhibits an octahedral geometry around the rhodium(III) center. A cyclic voltammogram of the complex exhibits ligand based quasi-irreversible oxidative and reductive responses. The electronic structure, redox properties and electronic excitations in the complex were interpreted by DFT and TDDFT calculations. The complex effectively catalyzed the transfer hydrogenation reaction of ketones with high yields in i-PrOH in the presence of a base. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Herein, the composite of palladium nanoparticles and graphene oxide (CPG) has been synthesized by a facile and very efficient method that provided chemical selectivity and high catalytic activity. The synthesized CPG was characterized by several techniques such as transmission and high-resolution electron microscopy (TEM and HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, and Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). CPG was tested for selective reduction of nitroarenes at room temperature. After the addition of CPG to the reaction media, catalytic performances were depended upon the cooperative effect of hydrogen activation with Pd nanoparticles, where the lack of electrons favors an excellent performance. Nitroarenes can be bound to the energetically preferred adsorption site for the nitro group in electrically enriched graphene oxide. In addition, the Pd nanoparticles transfer electrons to the graphene oxide which increases the functions of metal and carbon support. CPG exhibits both chemoprotective and high catalytic performance for hydrogenation of nitroarenes at room temperature. Aniline derivatives were obtained with high yields under mild conditions and a practical catalytic system was developed by the use of CPG.

An efficient synthesis of pyrimidines and pyridines has been developed from readily available aromatic ketones, aldehydes and ammonium salts under transition-metal-free conditions. In this strategy, ammonium salts were used as nitrogen sources and only water was generated as a nontoxic byproduct. A catalytic amount of NaIO4 played an important role in the selectivity control, whereas substituted pyridines were dominantly formed in its absence.

Many natural or synthetic chalcones have potential anti-tumor activity. Here, we synthesized two series of chalcone analogues containing a thieno [2,3-cflpyrimidin-2-y] group and evaluated for their cytotoxic activity towards cultured human lung cancer A549 and colorectal HCT-116 cells. Among them, compound 8d was the most cytotoxic against HCT-116 cells, with an IC50 value of 2.65 mu M. Analyses of the phenotypic changes induced by this compound found a dose-dependent accumulation of HCT-116 cells in sub-G1 phase, indicating that compound 8d might induce apoptosis. Furthermore, we found that 8d triggered mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization, promoted reactive oxygen species formation in HCT-116 cells, and increased the percentage of early and late apoptotic cells. Finally, immunoblotting indicated that 8d increased PARP-1 and caspases 3, 7 and 9 cleavage. These data suggest that compound 8d induces apoptosis via the mitochondrial death pathway.

An imino-phosphanamide ligand, [NHIiPrMe2 P(Ph)NH-2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i] (LH), containing two different N-substituents was prepared by the direct reaction of the lithium salt of N-heterocyclic imine (NHI) with phenylchloro-2,6-diisopropylphenyl phosphanamine, PhP(CONH-2,6-Pr-i(2)-C6H3. Reaction of LH with Y(N-(SiMe3)(2))(3) afforded the heteroleptic complex, [{L}Y(N(SiMe3)(2))(2)] (1), by elimination of HN(SiMe3)(2). Compound 1 was characterized by multinuclear NMR and X-ray crystallography. In the complex, the Y(III) center was found to be tetracoordinate in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The ligand, imino-phosphanamidinate, [L] , functions in a chelating manner, and its coordination to Y(III) results in a distorted 4-membered YPN2 ring. As a proof of principle of its activity, 1 was used as a precatalyst for the hydroboration of various aldehydes and ketones using HBpin as the hydrogen source. The hydroboration reaction was rapid and clean even with low catalyst loadings (0.01-0.1 mol %). In addition, a very good functional group tolerance was observed in these reactions.

Main observation and conclusion Four ruthenium(II) complexes 1-4 [RN=CH-(2,4-(Bu-t)(2)C6H2O)]RuH(PPh3)(2)(CO) (R = C6H5, 1; R = 4-MeC6H4, 2; R = 4-ClC6H4, 3; R = 4-BrC6H4, 4) bearing Schiff base ligands were prepared by treating RuHClCO(PPh3)(3) with RN=CH-(2,4-(Bu-t)(2)C6H2OH (L1-L4) in the presence of triethylamine. Their structures were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. These Ru(II) complexes exhibit high catalytic performance and good functional-group compatibility in the acceptorless dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols, affording the corresponding ketones in 82%-94% yields.

A series of substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac were synthesized as potential herbicides. The structures of the synthesized new compounds were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, HRMS, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction (XRD). The pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activity studies show that 4-CF3 (6 f), 4-NO2 (6 i), 4-NH2 (6 j), 4-F (6 l), and 2,4-2OCH(3) (6 s) substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac exhibit better pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds than other synthesized new compounds. In pre-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds as compared to Staple (Pyrithiobac-sodium). In post-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against dicotyledon weeds and better herbicidal activities against monocotyledon weeds as compared to Staple. Compounds 6 i and 6 l with high herbicidal activities and similar binding mode with acetolactate synthase as compared to Staple were further subjected to crop safety study. The results show that the safety of compound 6 l to cotton is as good as Staple and better than 6 i. The present work indicates that compound 6 l may serve as a new candidate for potential herbicides.

Melamine based polymer (MT) was prepared and then reacted with a mixture of glucose (Glu) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) under hydrothermal conditions to afford, MT/Glu-CD. Then, the adsorption of Pd salt was realized on MT/Glu-CD. The resulting compound was subsequently carbonized to furnish Pd/MT/C that exhibited high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes in aqueous media. To elucidate the roles of CD, Glu, the molar ratio of Glu:CD and the carbonization in the catalytic activity, several control catalysts have been prepared and their performances for a model hydrogenation reaction were compared with that of Pd/MT/C. The results confirmed the importance of the carbonization as well as the presence of CD for achieving high catalytic activity. Moreover, it was found that the molar ratio of Glu:CD could affect the catalytic activity of the final catalyst and the optimum molar ratio of Glu:CD was 30:70. The recycling test as well as measurement of Pd leaching demonstrated high recyclability and low Pd leaching of Pd/MT/C.

The organocatalysed asymmetric vinylogous Michael addition of alpha,alpha-dicyanoolefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones have been reported in the last decade, however, chalcones have been poorly explored. Moreover, a considerable part of the publications in this theme still employs undesirable solvents, such as toluene and THF, with concerns related to health and environmental safety. We report herein the use of a bifunctional catalyst derived from a Cinchona alkaloid to perform the enantio- and diastereoselective Michael addition of alpha,alpha-dicyanoolefins to chalcones using 2-MeTHF as solvent. A Lewis base supported terminal uranium phosphinidene, [eta(5)-1,3-(Me3C)(2)C5H3]2U(= P-2,4,6-(Bu3C6H2)-Bu-t)(OPMe3) (5), is isolated from the reaction of the uranium methyl chloride [eta(5)- 1,3-(Me3C)(2)C5H3](2)U(Cl) Me (4) with 2, 4, 6-(Me3C)(3)C6H2PHK in toluene in the presence of Me3PO. Moreover, the reactivity of uranium phospinidene 5 toward a series of small molecules was comprehensively explored. While no reactivity of 5 with internal alkynes is observed attributed to steric hindrance, it readily reacts in good yields with various small molecules including isothiocyanates, aldehydes, imines, diazenes, carbodiimides, nitriles, isonitriles, and organic azides, yielding uranium sulfidos, oxidos, metallaheterocycles, and imido complexes.
