The starting precursors 2-carbohydrazides, bearing thienopyridine moiety, were prepared using 2-thioxopyridine-3-carbonitriles as key synthons. Next, 2-carbohydrazides were reacted with a variety of 4-substituted benzylidinemalononitriles or 4-substituted benzaldehydes to afford a new series of the target hydrazones incorporating thienopyridine moiety. The elemental analyses and spectral data were used to demonstrate the structures of new hydrazones series. The in vitro antibacterial activities of the target hydrazones were evaluated against different strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In comparison with chloramphenicol as a reference drug, hydrazones 13b, 13c and 13d, linked to p-C1, p-Br and p-Me moiety, respectively, exhibited the strongest activities against all tested bacteria with MIC values in the range of 6.2-12.5 mu g/mL. In addition, several new hydrazones were tested as in vitro cytotoxic agents against each of human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cell line, colon cancer Caco2 cell line and liver hepatocellular carcinoma HEPG2 cell line. The hydrazones 13b, 13c and 13d demonstrated the best cytotoxicity against the tested eukaryotic cells. Furthermore, both experimental and docking studies could predict the promising inhibitory activities of hydrazones 13c and 13d against COX-2 enzyme with IC 50 of 0.110 and 0.104 mu M, respectively, when compared with Celecoxib (IC50 of 0.115 mu M). A group of new polyimides (PIs) containing xanthene bulky groups and heterocyclic pyridine ring were synthesized by polycondensation reaction by using new symmetric and asymmetric diamines with available dianhydrides. The prepared diamines and PIs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The PIs have desirable solubility in common aprotic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethylacetamide, and pyridine as a less polar solvent. The PIs with inherent viscosities in the range of 0.51-0.72 dL/g were amorphous in nature, showed glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of about 270-300 degrees C, and 10% weight loss at temperatures 384-443 degrees C. They showed fluorescence emission (quantum yield 7-12%) due to the presence of xanthene and pyridine groups in their structure. The prepared PIs showed tensile strength of 81-91 MPa with elongation at break of 19-23%. The antibacterial properties of the PIs against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria and funguses were investigated. Also, a membrane of PI prepared by electrospinning method was used for the removal of different concentrations of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

In the present study, an innovative cold plasma treatment was used as a tool to fortify the white rice. The amounts of ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid were optimized for improving the bioavailability of iron. White rice samples were treated with plasma at a constant voltage of 20 kV for varying time (10 min and 15 min). The exposure time of plasma was selected based on the surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in the characteristics of hydrophilicity, surface energy, cooking time and hardness of plasma-treated rice. Plasma treated rice was fortified with the optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid solution. Optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid per 100 g of rice (862.93 mg and 1398.27 mg) were found by conducing experiments using Central Composite Design of Response Surface Methodology. Further, rice was blended with untreated rice in the ratio of 1:100 and 1:200 and was packed in LDPE and PP pouches and was stored at ambient temperature for further storage analysis. The in vitro bioavailability of iron was significantly higher in the plasma-treated fortified rice at both 1.35 and 7.5 pH than in the control sample, and plasma treatment significantly reduced the rate of oxidation of iron during storage.

Cross-dehydrogenative C-O coupling of N-hydroxyimides with ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids was achieved employing the di-tertbutyl peroxide as a source of free radicals and a dehydrogenating agent. The proposed method is experimentally simple and demonstrates the outstanding efficiency for the challenging CH substrates, such as unactivated esters and carboxylic acids. It was shown that N-hydroxyphthalimide drastically affects the oxidative properties of t-BuOOt-Bu by intercepting the t-BuO center dot radicals with the formation of phthalimide-N-oxyl radicals, a species responsible for both hydrogen atom abstraction from the CH reagent and the selective formation of the C-O coupling product by selective radical cross-recombination. The practical applicability of the developed method was exemplified by the single-stage synthesis of commercial reagent (known as Baran aminating reagent precursor) from isobutyric acid and N-hydroxysuccinimide, whereas in the standard synthetic approach, four stages are necessary.

A novel Zinc-based metal-organic framework [Zn-2(OH)(2)(H2TCPP)](DMF)(3) (1) was constructed by using a novel rigid symmetric tetracarboxylic connector, 2,3,5,6-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine (H4TCPP). A series of novel (E)-4-oxo-2-crotonamide derivatives were designed and synthesized to find potent antituberculosis agents. All the target compounds were evaluated for their in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv(MTB). Results reveal that 4-phenyl moiety at part A and short methyl group at part C were found to be favorable. Most of the derivatives displayed promising activity against MTB with MIC ranging from 0.125 to 4 mu g/mL. Especially, compound IIIa16 was found to have the best activity with MIC of 0.125 mu g/mL against MTB and with MIC in the range of 0.05-0.48 mu g/mL against drug-resistant clinical MTB isolates.

Simple alpha-(bromomethyl)styrenes can be processed to a variety of 1,1-difluorinated electrophilic building blocks via I(I)/I(III) catalysis. This inexpensive main group catalysis strategy employs p-TolI as an effective organocatalyst when combined with Selectfluor (R) and simple amine center dot HF complexes. Modulating Bronsted acidity enables simultaneous geminal and vicinal difluorination to occur, thereby providing a platform to generate multiply fluorinated scaffolds for further downstream derivatization. The method facilitates access to a tetrafluorinated API candidate for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Preliminary validation of an enantioselective process is disclosed to access alpha-phenyl-beta-difluoro-gamma-bromo/chloro esters.

The second step entails addition of diisobutylaluminum chloride and heating at about 130 degrees C overnight to afford allylsilanes in fair yields.

We herein report Cu mediated side-directed dehydroxyalkylative halogenation of aryl alcohols. C(aryl)-C bonds of aryl alcohols were effectively cleaved, affording the corresponding aryl chlorides, bromides and iodides in excellent yields. Aryl alcohols could serve as both aromatic electrophilic and radical synthetic equivalents during the reaction.
