The reduction of nitroarenes is the most efficient route for the preparation of aromatic primary amines. These reductions are generally performed in the presence of heterogeneous transition metal catalysts, which are rather efficient but long and tedious to prepare. In addition, they contain very expensive metals that are in most cases difficult to reuse. Therefore, the development of efficient, easily accessible and reusable Pd catalysts obtained rapidly from safe and non-toxic starting materials was implemented in this report. Two bottom-up synthesis methods were used, the first consisted in the impregnation of a micro/mesoporous carbon support with a Pd salt solution, followed by thermal reduction (at 300, 450 or 600 degrees C) while the second involved a direct synthesis based on the co-assembly and pyrolysis (600 degrees C) of a mixture of a phenolic precursor, glyoxal, a surfactant and a Pd salt. The obtained composites possess Pd nanoparticles (NPs) of tunable sizes (ranging from 1-2 to 7.0 nm) and homogeneously distributed in the carbon framework (pores/walls). It turned out that they were successfully used for mild and environment-friendly hydrogenations of nitroarenes at room temperature under H-2(1 atm) in EtOH in the presence of only 5 mequiv. of supported Pd. The determinations of the optimal characteristics of the catalysts constituted a second objective of this study. It was found that the activity of the catalysts was strongly dependent on the Pd NPs sizes,i.e., catalysts bearing small Pd NPs (1.2 nm obtained at 300 degrees C and 3.4 nm obtained at 450 degrees C) exhibited an excellent activity, while those containing larger Pd NPs (6.4 nm and 7.0 nm obtained at 600 degrees C, either by indirect or direct methods) were not active. Moreover, the possibility to reuse the catalysts was shown to be dependent on the surface chemistry of the Pd NPs: the smallest Pd NPs are prone to oxidation by air and their surface was gradually covered by a PdO shell decreasing their activity during reuse. A good compromise between intrinsic catalytic activity (i.e. during first use) and possibility of reuse was found in the catalyst made by impregnation followed by reduction at 450 degrees C since the hydrogenation could be performed in only 2 h in EtOH or even in water. The catalyst was quantitatively recovered after reaction by filtration, used at least 7 times with no loss of efficiency. Advantageously, almost Pd-free primary aromatic amines were obtained since the Pd leaching was very low (<0.1% of the introduced amount). Compared to numerous reports from the literature, the catalysts described here were both easily accessible from eco-friendly precursors and very active for hydrogenations under mild and green reaction conditions. A water-mediated MCR strategy has been developed for the synthesis of donor (D)-acceptor(A) type hydrazinyl thiazolyl coumarins (HTCs) (4) in excellent isolated yields (90-98%) from a three component reaction of aromatic aldehydes/ketones (1), thiosemicarbazide (2) and 3-(2-bromoacetyl)-2H-chromen-2-one (3) catalyzed by an environmentally compatible montmorillonite (MMT) K10 clay at RT for 20-40 min. The present MCR strategy has several advantages that include its wide-spread substrate scope, eco-compatibility, short reaction times and products that do not require chromatographic purification. Besides, the method is simple to perform, it is easy to construct C-N, C=N and C-S bonds in one pot and the reaction can be scaled up to a gram level. Moreover, the catalyst can be reused 7 times without significant change of activity. The photophysical properties of the synthesized D-A type HTCs are also studied and it was noticed that the fluorescence properties can be varied with the position of electron donating group on the aromatic ring of aldehyde/ketone of HTCs. Most of the compounds exhibited bright fluorescence in chloroform (1.0 x 10(-5) M) with emission maxima ranging from 409 to 511 nm and large Stokes shifts. Further, the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the HTCs are found in the range from -5.65 eV to -5.22 eV and -2.67 eV to -2.17 eV, respectively, and in good agreement with the reported hole transporting materials.

The selective hydrogenation of the nitro moiety is a difficult task in the presence of other reducible functional groups such as alkenes or alkynes. We show that the carbon-based (metal-free) catalyst can be used to selectively reduce substituted nitro groups using H-2 as a reducing agent, providing a great potential to replace noble-metal catalysts and contributing to simple and greener strategies for organic synthesis.

A simple and efficient microwave-assisted protocol has been developed for the synthetic of a series of novel pyrazole-indanone hybrid analogs. The target compounds have been synthesized by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of different 1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehydes with 2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one in the presence of potassium hydroxide. A visible-light-promoted synthesis of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones has been developed using 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium perchlorate as an organo-photocatalyst. The atmosphere-controlled method (Ar/air) enabled the selective synthesis of hydroxyl- and acyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones under mild reaction conditions without the use of any metal catalysts or toxic reagents. A fluorescent labelling experiment showed that hydroxyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones may have utility in various biological applications as potent fluorophores.

An efficient and facile approach has been described for the synthesis of a new series of 1-amino-2-oxo-nicotinonitriles and their sulfonamides under microwave and ultrasonic irradiation. The desired compounds 4 a-l were obtained via condensation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde, aryl or heteroaryl methyl ketone and cyanoacetohydrazide in the presence of catalytic piperidine under three synthetic methodologies (namely, conventional method, ultrasonic and microwave irradiation), the best results (short reaction times, pure products, high yield) were obtained by ultrasonic irradiation. Sulfonamides 5 a-f resulted via reaction of amines 4 a-e and 4 j with benzene sulfonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. The synthesized compounds give no significant results when investigated against Gm (+ve) and Gm (-ve) bacteria, and fungi strains.

A new Fe(II) Schiff base complex anchored on mont-K10 (Fe@imine-mont-K10) was synthesized and extensively characterized by FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDX, TEM, ESR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET surface area measurement, solid state Si-29 NMR and ICP-AES analysis. The catalytic activity of the complex was investigated for hydrogenation of ketones. The results indicated that it exhibited good catalytic activity for hydrogenation of aromatic as well as aliphatic ketones in i-PrOH/CH3CN (1:1) using Na-i-OPr as base at 80 degrees C resulting in moderate to excellent isolated yields (51-99%) of their corresponding products. Palladium-catalyzed denitrative Suzuki coupling of nitroarenes using 2-aryl-5-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-2,3-imidazolylidene[1,5-a]pyridines as the ligands is described. Several commercially available lipases were examined in a study on O-Si bond formation and cleavage applying silicon-based protecting groups and alcohols or the corresponding silyl ethers. With regard to deprotection, from silyl ether to the corresponding alcohol, only the solvent and the lipase were necessary. The influence of the protecting group, the lipase source, and the substituent was investigated to optimize the results. The TMS moiety could be removed in 24 hours of reaction at room temperature in aqueous systems (conv. up to 99%, depending on the substrate and lipase). The reverse reactions, that is, with the protection of the alcohols, were carried out in hexane using different silyl chlorides. The TMS, TES, and TBS moieties were successfully inserted in the primary and secondary alcohols without the need for dry conditions or an inert atmosphere, presenting conversions of up to 99%, depending on the substrate.
