Unprecedented direct access to terminal enones via alpha-methylenation of aryl ketones to form C=C bond is achieved under visible-light conditions using methanol as one carbon source substrate and solvent as well. The reaction involves Cu@g-C3N4-catalysed in situ oxidation of methanol into formaldehyde followed by dehydrative cross aldol type reaction. Various aryl ketones react efficiently with MeOH, producing alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds only in 4-8 h at room temperature in excellent yield (84-97%). Operational simplicity, wide substrate scope, ambient reaction conditions, visible-light photocatalysis and novel application of MeOH as methylene donor substrate are the salient features making the envisaged protocol mild, efficient and green alternative to the existing methods for synthesis of such fine chemicals.

The extensive use of antimicrobial drugs and their resistance against bacterial infections have led to discover new antimicrobial compounds. In this study, we wish to report, one-pot synthesis of 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine derivatives (1a-14a). These compounds were synthesized in the presence of Cu(OAc)(2) as a highly effective heterogeneous acid catalyst. Here we evaluated the antimicrobial activities of these compounds against different species of microorganisms including gram positive and gram negative bacteria as well as fungi. Standard antimicrobial methods include disc diffusion and Broth microdilution method according to the protocol of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Synthesis of 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine derivatives were done via reaction of aromatic aldehydes, acetophenone derivatives, malononitrile and ammonium acetate in the presence of Cu(OAc)(2) under reflux condition. The results show compound 2-amino-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-phenylnicotinonitrile (10a) had the best antimicrobial efficacy toward C. albicans, E. faecalis, P. aeroginosa and E. coli. In conclusion, comparing the structure and activity of the compounds (10a), this compound with the presence of Cl residue atpara-position of phenyl ring improves the antibacterial and antifungal activity.

A water-mediated and catalyst-free practical method for the synthesis of a new series of pharmaceutically interesting functionalized 5-(2-arylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-3-yl)pyrimidine-2,4-(1H,3H)-diones has been accomplished based on a one-pot multicomponent reaction between arylglyoxal monohydrates, 2-aminopyridines/2-aminopyrimidine, and barbituric/N,N-dimethylbarbituric acids under reflux conditions. The salient features of this protocol are avoidance of any additive/catalyst and toxic organic solvents, use of water as reaction medium, clean reaction profiles, operational simplicity, ease of product isolation/purification without the aid of tedious column chromatography, good to excellent yields, and high atom-economy and low E-factor.

In attempt to take advantages of naturally occurring compounds for the catalysis, a novel composite composed of beta-cyclodextrin, dendrimer and bentonite clay is fabricated and utilized as a support for the stabilization of Pd nanoparticles. To prepare the support, bentonite is amino functionalized and then successively reacted with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and ethylenediamine to furnish a dendrimer of generation II on bentonite. Afterwards, the terminal functionalities of the dendrimer were adorned with cyclodextrin. Bentonite played role in the hetemgenation of the catalyst and improvement of the stability of the composite while, cyclodextrins served as molecular shuttles and capping agent for the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles. Dendrimer with multi nitrogen atoms, on the other hand, improved Pd anchoring through electrostatic interactions. The catalyst was applied for the hydrogenation of nitmarenes under mild reaction condition in aqueous media in a selective manner. Notably, the catalyst could be recovered and reused repeatedly.

A synergistic gold-iron (Au-Fe) catalytic system was developed for sequential alkyne hydration and vinyl Au addition to aldehydes or ketones. Fe(acac)(3) was identified as an essential co-catalyst in preventing vinyl Au protodeauration and facilitating nucleophilic additions. Effective C-C bond formation was achieved under mild conditions (room temperature) with excellent regioselectivity and high efficiency (1% [Au], up to 95% yields). The intramolecular reaction was also achieved, giving successful macrocyclization (16-31 ring sizes) with excellent yields (up to 90%, gram scale) without extended dilution (0.2 M), which highlights the great potential of this new crossed aldol strategy in challenging target molecule synthesis.

We demonstrate a method to boost the photocatalysis of titania by constructing a core-shell structure. The crucial technique is to capsulate the titania nanoparticles by a sheath of nitrogen-doped carbon (TiO2@N-AC) with a thickness at 3.5-7.5 nm, which creates an exceptional effect to accelerate the catalytic hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes with isopropanol as the hydrogen source under ultraviolet or visible-light irradiation. In the catalytic hydrogenation of various nitroarenes with substituted groups of -Cl, -F, -C-C, -C-O, and -C=N, TiO2@N-AC exhibits high conversions and selectivities to the corresponding functionalized anilines, even outperforming the catalysts containing noble metals. Mechanism study demonstrates that the TiO2@N-AC catalyst benefits the selective adsorption of the nitro group rather than other substituted groups, which efficiently avoids the undesirable side reactions. Importantly, the catalyst is stable and exhibits constant performances in the continuous recycling tests.

An organometallic species is generated by Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation, which is then coupled with strained bicyclobutanes (BCBs) and a prochiral carbon electrophile in a three-component reaction. This work illustrates a rare example of BCBs in transition metal catalysis and demonstrates their broad potential to access novel reaction pathways. The method developed exhibits ample functional group tolerance, and the products can be further transformed into valuable alpha-quaternary beta-lactones. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest a twofold C-C bond cleavage sequence involving sigma-bond insertion and an ensuing beta-carbon elimination event.

An efficient Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O-promoted amidoalkylation re-action for the synthesis of 3-substituted isoindolinones involving various gamma-hydroxy lactams and nucleophiles has been successfully developed. The transformation proceeds with both carbon (ketones and arenes) and heteroatom (alcohols, thiols, and amines) nucleophiles and in both intermolecular and intramolecular manners. The prominent features of the present strategy are wide substrate scope, excellent group tolerability, and moderate to good yields (up to 96% yield).
