Highly electron-deficient benzylic alcohols, however, were ineffective coupling partners due to the increased difficulty of C-O bond ionization. Herein, we report the use of perfluoropinacol as an effective co-catalyst to improve the reactivity of a boronic acid catalyst in the Friedel-Crafts benzylations of electronically deactivated primary and secondary benzylic alcohols. According to spectroscopic studies, it is believed that perfluoropinacol condenses with the arylboronic acid catalyst to form a highly electrophilic and Lewis acidic boronic ester. This in situ formed species enables a more facile ionization of the benzylic alcohols likely through a mode of activation promoted by a Lewis acid assisted hydronium Bronsted acid generated from the interactions of the transient boronic ester with hexafluoroisopropanol solvent and water.

A three-component reaction has been developed for the construction of multiaryl-substituted pyrrole derivatives from arylketones, amines, and nitrovinylarenes under metal- free conditions. Hence, homologous 1,2,4-triaryl-substituted pyrrole products were obtained in good to high yields. Furthermore, 2,3,5-triaryl-substituted pyrroles were selectively formed in the absence of nitrovinylarenes. An efficient and low-cost supported Pt catalyst for hydrogenation of niroarenes was prepared with colloid Pt precursors and alpha-Fe2O3 as a support. The catalyst with Pt content as low as 0.2 wt% exhibits high activities, chemoselectivities and stability in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and a variety of niroarenes. The conversion of nitrobenzene can reach 3170 mol(conv) h(-1) mol(pt)(-1) under mild conditions (30 degrees C, 5 bar), which is much higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst and many reported catalysts under similar reaction conditions. The spatial separation of the active sites for H-2 dissociation and hydrogenation should be responsible for the high chemoselectivity, which decreases the contact possibility between the reducible groups of nitroarenes and Pt nanoparticles. The unique surface properties of alpha-Fe2O3 play an important role in the reaction process. It provides active sites for hydrogen spillover and reactant adsorption, and ultimately completes the hydrogenation of the nitro group on the catalyst surface. An amino-functionalized silica-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposite (Fe3O4@SiO2/APTS) was synthesized. The Fe3O4@SiO2 microspheres possessed a well-defined core-shell structure, uniform sizes and high magnetization. An immobilized ruthenium nanoparticle catalyst (Fe3O4@SiO2/APTS/Ru) was obtained after coordination and reduction of Ru3+ on the Fe3O4@SiO2/APTS nanocomposite. The Ru nanoparticles were not only ultra-small with nearly monodisperse sizes but also had strong affinity with the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2/APTS. The obtained catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of a variety of aromatic nitro compounds, even at room temperature. Moreover, Fe3O4@SiO2/APTS/Ru was easily recovered using a magnetic field and directly reused for at least five cycles without significant loss of its activity.

Many natural or synthetic chalcones have potential anti-tumor activity. Here, we synthesized two series of chalcone analogues containing a thieno [2,3-cflpyrimidin-2-y] group and evaluated for their cytotoxic activity towards cultured human lung cancer A549 and colorectal HCT-116 cells. Among them, compound 8d was the most cytotoxic against HCT-116 cells, with an IC50 value of 2.65 mu M. Analyses of the phenotypic changes induced by this compound found a dose-dependent accumulation of HCT-116 cells in sub-G1 phase, indicating that compound 8d might induce apoptosis. Furthermore, we found that 8d triggered mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization, promoted reactive oxygen species formation in HCT-116 cells, and increased the percentage of early and late apoptotic cells. Finally, immunoblotting indicated that 8d increased PARP-1 and caspases 3, 7 and 9 cleavage. These data suggest that compound 8d induces apoptosis via the mitochondrial death pathway.

A green and efficient visible-light promoted aerobic oxidative C-C bond cleavage of vicinal diols in micellar medium has been developed. This protocol used graphitic carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies (CN620) as a metal-free recyclable photocatalyst and CTAB as surfactant in water. Control experiments and the ESR results indicated that superoxide radicals and valence band holes played an important role in the reaction. Further isotope experiments suggested both a beta-scission/HAT pathway and an oxidation/hydrolysis/dehydration pathway for the reaction, which is different from previous reports. The semiconductor/micellar catalyst system can be recycled at least 10 times without a significant reduction in activity. Furthermore, this reaction could be carried out under solar light irradiation and was applicable to large-scale reactions with similar results.

A green Barluenga-Valdes cross-coupling reaction for the synthesis of 1,1-diarylethylenes using palladium catalysis has been developed. The new catalytic system based on Pd/Xphos-SO3Na or Pd/MeDavephos-CF3SO3 in PEG/H2O under microwave irradiation was found to be the best conditions for this transformation. Designing and fabricating catalysts with highly dispersed metal nanoclusters (NCs) is very crucial for achieving high activity and selectivity. In this work, all-alkynyl-protected [Ag-74(C CPh)(44)](NO3)(2) cluster (Ag duster) with a well-defined structure was firstly intercalated in alpha-zirconium phosphate (alpha-ZrP) through ion-exchange. Then the atomically precise Ag cluster can be immobilized robustly in the support by a sequential process of carbonization, calcination and reduction. The supported Ag duster showed the relatively high catalytic activity (TOP = 222.9-445.8 h(-1)) and excellent recyclability for hydrogenation of a variety of nitroaromatics, as well as the compounds with carbon-carbon double bonds even if the loading of Ag was as low as 0.72 wt.%. Zirconium pyrophosphate acts as not only a stabilizer of Ag duster through a spatial confinement, but also an adsorption site for nitroaromatics. The residual carbon arisen from thermal decomposition of all-alkynyl ligand coordinating on Ag cluster exerted an important role in protecting Ag duster from sintering. As a result, the intercalation of Ag cluster in the interlayer region is a promising strategy for extending their potential applications in catalysis.

A series of substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac were synthesized as potential herbicides. The structures of the synthesized new compounds were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, HRMS, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction (XRD). The pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activity studies show that 4-CF3 (6 f), 4-NO2 (6 i), 4-NH2 (6 j), 4-F (6 l), and 2,4-2OCH(3) (6 s) substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac exhibit better pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds than other synthesized new compounds. In pre-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds as compared to Staple (Pyrithiobac-sodium). In post-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against dicotyledon weeds and better herbicidal activities against monocotyledon weeds as compared to Staple. Compounds 6 i and 6 l with high herbicidal activities and similar binding mode with acetolactate synthase as compared to Staple were further subjected to crop safety study. The results show that the safety of compound 6 l to cotton is as good as Staple and better than 6 i. The present work indicates that compound 6 l may serve as a new candidate for potential herbicides.
