There has been a great deal of attention to the development of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts for the selective and mild hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines. Herein, a biomass-derived carbon material supported Ni catalyst (Ni/C) was facilely prepared by a one-pot pyrolysis process, and the as-prepared Ni/C catalyst demonstrated a high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines at room temperature. The Ni/C catalyst not only demonstrated a high catalytic activity but also showed a good tolerance to other functional groups. Structurally diverse primary amines were achieved in yields from 92% to 99% within a few hours at room temperature under 5 bar H-2. Furthermore, the Ni/C catalyst showed good reusability without the loss of its activity.

With an intention of identifying chalcone derivatives exhibiting anti-protozoal activity, a cohort of relatively unexplored arylpyrrole-based chalcone derivatives were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The resultant compounds were evaluated in vitro for their potential activity against a cultured Trypanosoma brucei brucei 427 strain. Several compounds displayed mostly modest in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity with compounds 10e and 10h emerging as active candidates with IC50 values of 4.09 and 5.11 mu M, respectively. More importantly, a concomitant assessment of their activity against a human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cell line revealed that these compounds are non-toxic.

As the global need for drugs getting increases, the necessity of novel and effective drugs are the need of the day. Pyrazoles are one of the active molecules in novel drug discovery. The present study deals about the synthesis of precursors 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-isopropyl-2-(methylsulfonyl) pyrimidine-5-carbohydrazides (3a-m) from methyl- 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-isopropyl-2-(methyl sulfonyl) pyrimidine-5-carboxylate (2) by treating with substituted acetophenone. Further, Vilsmeier-Haack reaction of compounds 3a-m at 70 degrees C for 8-10 hrs gave novel pyrazole carbaldehyde derivatives (4a-m) in good yield. Biological properties like antioxidant, anti-breast cancer and anti-inflammatory of newly synthesized compounds (4a-m) were determined. The enzymes Cyclooxygenase-2 and Phosphoinositide-3-Kinase are most responsible for the corresponding diseases such as inflammation and breast cancer respectively. In order to examine the interaction between these two enzymes and our synthesized compounds 4a-m, molecular docking study was carried out. From the results, few compounds of 4a-m were found to have anti-inflammatory properties by showing excellent COX-2 inhibition and HRBC membrane stabilization properties. ADMET prediction results were also valuable to screen the most effective pyrazole derivatives to establish them as future COX-2 inhibitors or anti-inflammatory drugs.

A series of robust metallo-aerogels are readily fabricated by pyrolysis of xerogels derived from chitosan-metal (M = Fe, Co, Ni) hydrogels. Owing to the strong coordination between metal ions and the functional groups (NH2 and OH) of chitosan, metallo-aerogels consisting of encapsulated metal-nanoparticles (MNPs) by graphite shells were obtained, as supported by various characterizations including high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman. The resulting metallo-aerogels could be functioned as highly stable, efficient and selective nanocatalysts towards the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to amines at low catalyst loading (1.2 mol.%-2.4 mol.%). Remarkably, the metallo-aerogels could be reused for more than 30 runs without obvious loss of activity and selectivity. These distinguished performances were attributed to the graphitic shells formed during the pyrolysis, which hampered the possible aggregation of MNPs, prevented metal leaching and increased their stability.

The organocatalysed asymmetric vinylogous Michael addition of alpha,alpha-dicyanoolefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones have been reported in the last decade, however, chalcones have been poorly explored. Moreover, a considerable part of the publications in this theme still employs undesirable solvents, such as toluene and THF, with concerns related to health and environmental safety. We report herein the use of a bifunctional catalyst derived from a Cinchona alkaloid to perform the enantio- and diastereoselective Michael addition of alpha,alpha-dicyanoolefins to chalcones using 2-MeTHF as solvent. Melamine based polymer (MT) was prepared and then reacted with a mixture of glucose (Glu) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) under hydrothermal conditions to afford, MT/Glu-CD. Then, the adsorption of Pd salt was realized on MT/Glu-CD. The resulting compound was subsequently carbonized to furnish Pd/MT/C that exhibited high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes in aqueous media. To elucidate the roles of CD, Glu, the molar ratio of Glu:CD and the carbonization in the catalytic activity, several control catalysts have been prepared and their performances for a model hydrogenation reaction were compared with that of Pd/MT/C. The results confirmed the importance of the carbonization as well as the presence of CD for achieving high catalytic activity. Moreover, it was found that the molar ratio of Glu:CD could affect the catalytic activity of the final catalyst and the optimum molar ratio of Glu:CD was 30:70. The recycling test as well as measurement of Pd leaching demonstrated high recyclability and low Pd leaching of Pd/MT/C.

A series of substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac were synthesized as potential herbicides. The structures of the synthesized new compounds were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, HRMS, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction (XRD). The pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activity studies show that 4-CF3 (6 f), 4-NO2 (6 i), 4-NH2 (6 j), 4-F (6 l), and 2,4-2OCH(3) (6 s) substituted acetophenone oxime esters of Pyrithiobac exhibit better pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds than other synthesized new compounds. In pre-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds as compared to Staple (Pyrithiobac-sodium). In post-emergence herbicidal activity study, 6 f, 6 i, 6 j, 6 l, and 6 s exhibit similar herbicidal activities against dicotyledon weeds and better herbicidal activities against monocotyledon weeds as compared to Staple. Compounds 6 i and 6 l with high herbicidal activities and similar binding mode with acetolactate synthase as compared to Staple were further subjected to crop safety study. The results show that the safety of compound 6 l to cotton is as good as Staple and better than 6 i. The present work indicates that compound 6 l may serve as a new candidate for potential herbicides.

Main observation and conclusion Four ruthenium(II) complexes 1-4 [RN=CH-(2,4-(Bu-t)(2)C6H2O)]RuH(PPh3)(2)(CO) (R = C6H5, 1; R = 4-MeC6H4, 2; R = 4-ClC6H4, 3; R = 4-BrC6H4, 4) bearing Schiff base ligands were prepared by treating RuHClCO(PPh3)(3) with RN=CH-(2,4-(Bu-t)(2)C6H2OH (L1-L4) in the presence of triethylamine. Their structures were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
