It is a persistent target to develop noble-metal-free catalysts that can achieve chemoselective hydrogenation of nitro compounds under mild reaction conditions. In this work, we report a new strategy for preparation of hydrogenation catalysts containing both CoNx and CoyZnS supported on N-doped porous carbon (CoNx-CoyZnS@NPC-Z). The CoNx-CoyZnS@NPC-Z catalysts were prepared by pyrolyzing the protein-metal-ion networks, followed by treatment with acid. We found that CoNxCoyZnS@NPC-3 catalyst delivers high catalytic activity and selectivity, affording almost full conversion and >98% selectivity in water/methanol mixture solvents at 90 degrees C under 5 bar of H-2 pressure for 3 h of reaction. Notably, the catalytic hydrogenation can work even under 1 bar of H-2 pressure and at room temperature with high conversion and selectivity. Besides, CoNx-CoyZnS@NPC-3 exhibits remarkable tolerance to CO or H2S poisoning and acid erosion.

A method for the synthesis of polysubstituted 4-difluoromethyl and perfluoroalkyl pyrazole derivatives by the Lewis acid- and base-co-mediated reaction of perfluoroacetyl diazoester with ketones is reported. A series of structurally diverse 4-difluoromethylated and perfluoroalkylated pyrazoles were obtained in moderate to good yields. A group of trisubstituted pyrazoles containing thiophen, 2-alkyloxypyridine and thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine heterocycles were synthesized in a study for possible analgesic agents. The desired products were obtained by reaction of 2-(1-(3-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yemethylene)malononitrile with sulfur in presence of TEA, followed by treatment with different reagents. Newer products were examined for their analgesic properties, among them, analog 7 showed significant analgesic effects in comparison with reference medicines activity.

Using green chemical method a series of fifteen systematically substituted 3-(9-substituted anthracen-10-yl)-1-(4-phenyl substituted)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives having high nonlinear absorption coefficient have been synthesized. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were studied using nanosecond pulses at 532 nm wavelength. All 15 derivatives are found to show high nonlinear absorption in the range of 35-640 cm/GW. Among these the derivatives with-NO2 as one of the substitution group show higher nonlinear absorption. The origin of high nonlinear absorption with low linear absorption in the compounds has been attributed to two-step two-photon absorption process. We have shown that the energy bands of these compounds are distributed such that for excitation at 532 nm they have strong nonlinear absorption. These properties of the reported compounds make them a potential candidate for biological imaging and other applications which are based on nonlinear absorption. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Hollow porous carbon (HPC) composed of inner voids and outer shells, is receiving increasing attention in constructing supported catalysts for diverse applications. It is of great allure but still challenging to controllably tune the secondary porous structure (pore in the outer shells) of the HPC support to improve the performance of the catalysts. Herein, a Ni-substituted ZIF-67 was used as a precursor to prepare HPC-supported catalysts. We found that Ni2+ can partially substitute Co2+ to create defected structure within ZIF-67, and the secondary pore structure of the derived HPC can be facilely tuned by adjusting the ratio of Ni2+ to Co2+. Catalyst HPC-Ni-ZIF-1 with hierarchical secondary pore and the largest pore volume exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds to corresponding amino compounds.

Herein, we developed a Ru(II)(BPGA) complex that could be used to catalyze chemo- and site-selective C-H oxidation. The described ruthenium complex was designed by replacing one pyridyl group on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine with an electron-donating amide ligand that was critical for promoting this type of reaction. More importantly, higher reactivities and better chemo-, and site-selectivities were observed for reactions using the cis-ruthenium complex rather than the trans-one. This reaction could be used to convert sterically less hindered methyne and/or methylene C-H bonds of a various organic substrates, including natural products, into valuable alcohol or ketone products.

Background: Metformin has anticarcinogenic properties and is also known to inhibit the sonic hedgehog pathway, but population-based studies analyzing the potential protective effect for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are needed. Objectives: To delineate the association between metformin use and invasive SCC, SCC in situ (SCCis), and BCC. Methods: A population-based case-control study design was employed using all 6880 patients diagnosed in Iceland between 2003-2017 with first-time BCC, SCCis, or invasive SCC, and 69,620 population controls. Multivariate odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression. Results: Metformin was associated with a lower risk of developing BCC (OR, 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61-0.83), even at low doses. No increased risk of developing SCC was observed. SCCis risk was mildly elevated in the 501-1500 daily dose unit category (OR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.00-1.96). Limitations: This study was retrospective in nature with the inability to adjust for ultraviolet exposure, Fitzpatrick skin type, and comorbidities. Conclusion: Metformin is associated with decreased risk of BCC development, even at low doses. Metformin might have potential as a chemoprotective agent for patients at high risk of BCC, although this will need confirmation in future studies.

Zinc linked amino acid complex, Zn(l-proline)(2), is considered as a green catalyst for the synthesis of novel series of pyrimidine derivatives 5a-q. The pyrimidines 5a-q were prepared via two pathways: the first is a one-pot reaction of guanidines 3(a-c) with aromatic aldehyde 1 and acetophenones 2; and the second one is the reaction of guanidines 3(a-c) with different chalcones 4(a-j) in aqueous medium. The simplicity of the operation, the short reaction time, and the high efficiency (97%) are the main advantages of this protocol. Furthermore, the green aspects of this synthetic protocol were further investigated by examining the reusability of Zn(l-proline)(2) complex throughout five consecutive cycles without a significant loss of catalytic activity. This new procedure has presented remarkable advantages in terms of safety, simplicity, stability, mild conditions, a short reaction time, excellent yields, and high purities without using any organic solvents.
