A novel series of 1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-one (chalcone) derivatives was synthesized by a simple, eco-friendly, and efficient Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction and used as precursors for the synthesis of new pyrazoline derivatives. All the synthesized compounds were screened for anti-inflammatory related activities such as inhibition of phospholipase A2 (PLA2), cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2), IL-6, and TNF-alpha. The results of the above studies show that the compounds synthesized are effective inhibitors of above pro-inflammatory enzymes and cytokines. Overall, the results of the studies reveal that the pyrazolines with chlorophenyl substitution (1b-6b) seem to be important for inhibition of enzymes and cytokines. Molecular docking experiments were performed to clarify the molecular aspects of the observed COX-inhibitory activities of the investigated compounds.

Catalytic reductions of carbonyl-containing compounds are highly important for the safe, sustainable, and economical production of alcohols. Herein, we report on the efficient transfer hydrogenation of ketones catalyzed by a highly potent Mn(I)?NHC complex. Mn?NHC 1 is practical at metal concentrations as low as 75 ppm, thus approaching loadings more conventionally reserved for noble metal based systems. With these low Mn concentrations, catalyst deactivation is found to be highly temperature dependent and becomes especially prominent at increased reaction temperature. Ultimately, understanding of deactivation pathways could help close the activity/stability-gap with Ru and Ir catalysts towards the practical implementation of sustainable earth-abundant Mn-complexes.

During this transformation, one C=C bond and two C=N bonds were created by a single palladium-catalyzed reaction. Depending on the starting materials, a library of 5-(1-arylvinyl)-1H-benzimidazoles was synthesized. Among several arylvinylbenzimidazole derivatives evaluated, one compound exhibits excellent antiproliferative activity in the nanomolar concentration range against human colon carcinoma cell lines (HCT-116) and human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cell lines (A549).

These molecules were assayed as potential anti-Candida agents and they were shown to possess comparable, and in some cases higher biological activity than well-established topical and systemic antimycotic drugs (i.e. clotrimazole, fluconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, tioconazole, amphotericin B). Compounds endowed with the lowest MICs underwent further testing in order to assess their cytotoxic effect (CC50) on Hep2 cells, which demonstrated their relative safety. Finally, QSAR and 3-D QSAR models were used to predict putative chemical modifications of the 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one scaffold in order to design new and potential more active compounds against Candida spp.
