An efficient and sustainable synthetic protocol has been presented to synthesis and 5-substituted 1H-tetrazole privileged heterocyclic substructures. The synthetic protocol involves two-component reaction between aryl nitriles and NaN3 in water using complex of L-lysine-palladium nanoparticles (NPs) modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles as magnetically separable, recyclable, and reusable heterogeneous catalyst. Magnetically retrievable L-lysine-Pd(0) modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles were applied in [2 + 3] cycloaddition synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles. The advantages of this strategy include easy recovery and efficient reusability of the expensive Pd NPs, obtaining high yields of [2 + 3] cycloaddition, short reaction times, and all of the reported synthetic strategies are being performed in water as green solvent for a wide range of substrates.

Although alkynes have been extensively exploited in [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions with nitriles to form N-heterocyclic aromatics, the alkyne-like metal carbon triple bond has never been used in [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions with nitriles. We demonstrate the synthesis of the first metallapyrazine through [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of a metal carbyne complex with nitriles. Experimental observations and density functional theory calculations are evidence for the aromatic character of the metallapentalenopyrazine.

The synthesis, electronic structure, and reactivity of a uranium metallacyclopropene were comprehensively studied. Addition of diphenylacetylene (PhC equivalent to CPh) to the uranium phosphinidene metallocene [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U=P-2,4,6-tBu(3)C(6)H(2) (1) yields the stable uranium metallacyclopropene, [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U[eta(2)-C2Ph2] (2). Based on density functional theory (DFT) results the 5f orbital contributions to the bonding within the metallacyclopropene U-(eta(2)-C=C) moiety increases significantly compared to the related Th-IV compound [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)Th[eta(2)-C2Ph2], which also results in more covalent bonds between the [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U2+ and [eta(2)-C2Ph2](2-) fragments. Although the thorium and uranium complexes are structurally closely related, different reaction patterns are therefore observed. We report an efficient HCl center dot DMPU assisted one-pot conversion of aldehydes into nitriles. The use of HCl center dot DMPU as both an acidic source as well as a non-nucleophilic base constitutes an environmentally mild alternative for the preparation of nitriles. Our protocol proceeds smoothly without the use of toxic reagents and metal catalysts. Diverse functionalized aromatic, aliphatic and allylic aldehydes incorporating various functional groups were successfully converted to nitriles in excellent to quantitative yields. This protocol is characterized by a broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and high scalability.

In the present study, an innovative cold plasma treatment was used as a tool to fortify the white rice. The amounts of ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid were optimized for improving the bioavailability of iron. White rice samples were treated with plasma at a constant voltage of 20 kV for varying time (10 min and 15 min). The exposure time of plasma was selected based on the surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in the characteristics of hydrophilicity, surface energy, cooking time and hardness of plasma-treated rice. Plasma treated rice was fortified with the optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid solution. Optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid per 100 g of rice (862.93 mg and 1398.27 mg) were found by conducing experiments using Central Composite Design of Response Surface Methodology. Further, rice was blended with untreated rice in the ratio of 1:100 and 1:200 and was packed in LDPE and PP pouches and was stored at ambient temperature for further storage analysis. The in vitro bioavailability of iron was significantly higher in the plasma-treated fortified rice at both 1.35 and 7.5 pH than in the control sample, and plasma treatment significantly reduced the rate of oxidation of iron during storage.

While dual photocatalysis-transition metal catalysis strategies are extensively reported, the majority of systems feature two separate catalysts, limiting the potential for synergistic interactions between the catalytic centres. In this work we synthesised a series of tethered dual catalysts allowing us to investigate this underexplored area of dual catalysis. In particular, Ir(i) or Ir(iii) complexes were tethered to a BODIPY photocatalyst through different tethering modes. Extensive characterisation, including transient absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, suggest that there are synergistic interactions between the catalysts. The tethered dual catalysts were more effective at promoting photocatalytic oxidation and Ir-catalysed dihydroalkoxylation, relative to the un-tethered species, highlighting that increases in both photocatalysis and Ir catalysis can be achieved. The potential of these catalysts was further demonstrated through novel sequential reactivity, and through switchable reactivity that is controlled by external stimuli (heat or light).

The mode of asymmetric induction in an enantioselective intramolecular allylic substitution reaction catalyzed by a combination of palladium and a chiral phosphoric acid was investigated by a combined experimental and statistical modeling approach. Experiments to probe nonlinear effects, the reactivity of deuterium-labeled substrates, and control experiments revealed that nucleophilic attack to the pi-allylpalladium intermediate is the enantio-determining step, in which the chiral phosphate anion is involved in stereoinduction. Using multivariable linear regression analysis, we determined that multiple noncovalent interactions with the chiral environment of the phosphate anion are integral to enantiocontrol in the transition state. The synthetic protocol to form chiral pyrrolidines was further applied to the asymmetric construction of C-O bonds at fully substituted carbon centers in the synthesis of chiral 2,2-disubstituted benzomorpholines.

The efficient preparation of nitrile-containing building blocks is of interest due to their utility as synthetic intermediates and their prevalence in pharmaceuticals. As a result, significant efforts have been made to develop methods to access these motifs which rely on safer and non-toxic sources of CN. Herein, we report that 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanenitrile is an efficient, non-toxic, electrophilic CN source for the synthesis of nitrile-bearing quaternary centers by a thermodynamic transnitrilation and anion-relay strategy. This one-pot process leads to nitrile products resulting from the gem-difunctionalization of alkyl lithium reagents.
