The transformation of alkyl nitriles to symmetrical and asymmetrical secondary aliphatic amines promoted by the hexahydride complex OsH6 ((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) (1) is described, and the mechanisms of the reactions involved are established. Complex 1 catalyzes the aforementioned transformations of aryl-, pyridyl-, and alkoxy-functionalized alkyl nitriles with linear or branched chains. The formation of the secondary amines involves primary imines, primary amines, and secondary imines as organic intermediates. The reactions take place under mild conditions (toluene, 100 degrees C, and 4 bar of H-2). Stoichiometric reactions of 1 with pivalonitrile and 2-methoxyacetonitrile have allowed us to isolate the trihydride azavinylidene derivatives OsH3{=N=CHR}((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) (R = Bu-t (3), CH2OMe (4)). Their formation involves the insertion of the N-C triple bond of the substrates into an Os-H bond of the unsaturated tetrahydride OsH4 ((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) (A), which is generated by reductive elimination of H-2 from the hexahydride precursor. The reaction of these trihydride azavinylidene species with H-2 is the key step for the reduction of the N-C triple bond of the nitriles. In the absence of H-2, the attack of A to the azavinylidene ligand produces the rupture of its C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond. As a consequence of this attack and the presence of primary imines and amines in the reaction media, the binuclear complexes ((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) H4Os(mu-CN)OsH3{kappa(1)-N-(NH= CHCH2OMe)}((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) (5) and ((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2)H4Os(mu-CN)OsH3{kappa(1)-N-(NH2CH2CH2OMe)}((PPr3)-Pr-i)(2) (6) have been isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, for 2-methoxyacetonitrile. DFT calculations reveal noticeable similarities between the hydrogenations of nitriles to primary imines and those of primary imines to primary amines.

A new methodology for the carbonylative transformation of N-fluoro-sulfonamides into N-sulfonyl-beta-homoproline esters has been described. In the presence of a catalytic amount of Cu(OTf)(2), a range of beta-homoproline derivatives were prepared in moderate to good yield. The reaction proceeds via the intramolecular cyclization and intermolecular carbonylation of a free carbon radical. Notably, this procedure offers the possibility to build potential functionalized bioactive molecules.

A scalable synthetic method is described for both the preparation of ultrasmall palladium nanoparticles and their subsequent use in catalyzing an alpha-arylation reaction of nitriles in aqueous micelles. This method involves the intermediacy of carbanions or keteniminates, which are presumably stabilized by the micellar environment rather than being quenched with water. These Pd nanoparticles are thoroughly characterized. Mechanistic studies using P-31 NMR spectroscopy revealed the binding of phosphine ligand with the Pd surface and control experiment confirmed the zero-oxidation state of palladium. The scope of the transformation is demonstrated over 35 examples, including one at 50 g scale.

While dual photocatalysis-transition metal catalysis strategies are extensively reported, the majority of systems feature two separate catalysts, limiting the potential for synergistic interactions between the catalytic centres. In this work we synthesised a series of tethered dual catalysts allowing us to investigate this underexplored area of dual catalysis. In particular, Ir(i) or Ir(iii) complexes were tethered to a BODIPY photocatalyst through different tethering modes. Extensive characterisation, including transient absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, suggest that there are synergistic interactions between the catalysts. The tethered dual catalysts were more effective at promoting photocatalytic oxidation and Ir-catalysed dihydroalkoxylation, relative to the un-tethered species, highlighting that increases in both photocatalysis and Ir catalysis can be achieved. The potential of these catalysts was further demonstrated through novel sequential reactivity, and through switchable reactivity that is controlled by external stimuli (heat or light).

A simple and efficient continuous flow methodology has been developed for hydrogenation and reductive deuteration of nitriles to yield primary amines and also valuable alpha,alpha-dideutero analogues. Raney nickel proved to be a useful catalyst for the transformation of a wide range of nitriles under reasonably mild conditions with excellent deuterium incorporation (>90 %) and quantitative conversion. Among known model compounds, three new deuterated primary amines were prepared. The large-scale synthesis of deuterated tryptamine was also carried out to deliver 1.1 g product under flow conditions.

A novel and rapid approach to characterise the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in river water is presented using multi-residue targeted analysis and machine learning-assisted in silico suspect screening of passive sampler extracts. Passive samplers (Chemcatcher (R)) configured with hydrophilic-lipophilic balanced (HLB) sorbents were deployed in the Central London region of the tidal River Thames (UK) catchment in winter and summer campaigns in 2018 and 2019. Extracts were analysed by; (a) a rapid 5.5 min direct injection targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for 164 CECs and (b) a full-scan LC coupled to quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (QTOF-MS) method using data-independent acquisition over 15 min. From targeted analysis of grab water samples, a total of 33 pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, drug metabolites, personal care products and pesticides (including several EU Watch-List chemicals) were identified, and mean concentrations determined at 40 +/- 37 ng L-1. For targeted analysis of passive sampler extracts, 65 unique compounds were detected with differences observed between summer and winter campaigns. For suspect screening, 59 additional compounds were shortlisted based on mass spectral database matching, followed by machine learning-assisted retention time prediction. Many of these included additional pharmaceuticals and pesticides, but also new metabolites and industrial chemicals. The novelty in this approach lies in the convenience of using passive samplers together with machine learning-assisted chemical analysis methods for rapid, time-integrated catchment monitoring of CECs.
