The in air catalytic hydroboration of ketones and aldehydes with pinacolborane by an iron(ii) coordination polymer (CP) is carried out under mild and solvent-free conditions. The precatalyst is highly active towards a wide range of substrates including functionalized ketones and aldehydes in the presence of (KOBu)-Bu-t as an activator, achieving a high turnover number (TON) of up to 9500. Excellent chemoselectivity to aldehydes over ketones was also revealed, which is in sharp contrast with the results obtained under inert atmosphere using the same catalyst system. This catalyst observed here is not only highly efficient but also recyclable for reuse for at least 5 times without losing its effectiveness.

The reduction of nitroaromatic compounds to anilines is widely used throughout organic synthesis. Typical methods of performing this transformation utilize hydrogenation over a pyrophoric catalyst or a finely divided reducing metal, which often affords heterogeneous mixtures that are difficult to purify. Herein, we report for the first time the use of gallium metal as a reducing agent in organic synthesis. The reaction proceeds under aerobic conditions and affords homogeneous mixtures for a convenient workup. Using this method, twelve anilines were obtained in 33% to quantitative yields with short reaction times of 10-60 minutes.

An efficient Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O-promoted amidoalkylation re-action for the synthesis of 3-substituted isoindolinones involving various gamma-hydroxy lactams and nucleophiles has been successfully developed. Three alpha-aminophosphonates, namely diethyl[(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-ylamino)(4-trifluoromethylphenyl) methyl]phosphonate (3a), diethyl[(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-ylamino)(2-methoxyphenyl)methyl]phosphonate (3b) and diethyl[(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-ylamino)(4-nitrophenyl)methyl]phosphonate (3c), were synthetized via the Pudovik-type reaction between diethyl phosphite and imines, obtained from 5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-2-amine and aromatic aldehydes, under microwave irradiation. Compounds 3a-c underwent complexation with a ruthenium(ii) precursor, selectively at the more basic nitrogen atom of the oxadiazole ring, leading to the corresponding ruthenium complexes 4a-c of the formula [RuCl2(L)(p-cymene)] (L = alpha-aminophosphonates 3a-c). Complexes 4a-c proved to be efficient catalysts for the transfer hydrogenation of ketones to alcohols. All new compounds were fully characterised by elemental analysis, infrared, mass and NMR spectroscopy. An X-ray structure of the alpha-aminophosphonate 3b was obtained and revealed the presence, in the solid state, of an infinite chain of 3b units supramolecularly interlinked. Two X-ray diffraction studies carried out on ruthenium complexes confirm the specific coordination of the electron-enricher nitrogen atom of the oxadiazole ring.

Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials have exhibited promising applications in various fields. In this work, sulfur, nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (SNCs) with abundant pore structure were prepared by pyrolysis of sulfur, nitrogen-containing porous organic polymers (POPs) mixed with nano-CaCO3 at high temperature. Among the resultant materials, SNC-Ca-850 possesses a relatively high level of doped heteroatoms and exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds. It is noteworthy that nano-CaCO3 increases the doped sulfur content in the synthesized carbon materials to a large extent and impacts the existence modes of sulfur. In addition, it enhances the porous structure and specific surface area of the resultant SNCs significantly. This work provides a viable strategy to promote the doping of sulfur into carbon materials during the pyrolysis process.

In this study, the covalent bonding of linear poly(ionic liquids (PILs) with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was accessed by copolymerization of a vinyl-decorated COF with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride, followed by quaternization with tertiary amines. The resultant PIL-COF composite by anchoring a proper content of vinyl sites on the COF-based comonomer retains the crystallinity and porosity, thereby facilitating access of the reactants to the catalytic active sites. As a proof of concept, the dehydrative transformation of sorbitol into isosorbide was selected as a benchmark reaction, whose rate improved significantly in the presence of PIL-COF-0.33 compared with those of individual components and the mesoporous PIL counterpart due to uniform pore sizes and flexible linear catalytic chains. In addition, the hybrids bearing a chemical cross-linkage between PILs and COFs are robust, and PIL-COF-0.33 can be recovered and reused for 10 runs without significant reactivity loss. These findings provide the basis for a novel design concept for achieving both efficient and stable IL catalysis.

Malaria remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, primarily in young children and pregnant mothers. Here, we report the discovery and derivatization of a series of pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines targeting Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest species of the malaria parasite. Hit compounds in this series display sub-micromolar in vitro activity against the intraerythrocytic stage of the parasite as well as little to no toxicity against the human fibroblast BJ and liver HepG2 cell lines. In addition, our hit compounds show good activity against the liver stage of the parasite but little activity against the gametocyte stage. Parasitological profiles, including rate of killing, docking, and molecular dynamics studies, suggest that our compounds may target the Q(o) binding site of cytochrome bc(1).

Reduction of various azides using Na2S has been accomplished in water, and, in situ, the resulting amines on reaction with various ketones lead to pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines in one pot. Thus, a number of new trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine compounds have been prepared and screened for antimicrobial activity against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. A good number of compounds, 4a, 4b, 4d, 4f, 4i, 4k, 4l, 4m, 4r and 4s, were found to possess promising activity. Notably, Na2S on hydrolysis in water generates H2S and NaOH, which facilitate the reduction of azides followed by intramolecular cyclization leading to the title compounds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the synthesis of the title compounds in aqueous medium in a one-pot reaction.
