A three-component transition-metal-free aerobic method for the generation of 1,4-benzothiazines is reported herein. The KI/DMSO/O-2 system was found to be effective for the oxidative cyclization/coupling of 2-aminobenzenethiols, anilines, and methylketones. Hence, various structurally important imino 1,4-benzothiazines were assembled with broad functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies revealed an initial oxidation of ketone alpha C-H bonds by the KI/DMSO/O-2 oxidative system.

Some novel pyrimidine derivatives are prepared via one-pot reaction of triethoxymethane, aromatic ketone and ammonium acetate using catalytic system including nano-magnetic pyridinium-tribromide (TBP-SCMNPs). The synthesized new catalyst was characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, and TGA analysis. A pathway for the catalytic hydrosilylation of carbonyl substrates with M(C6F5)(3) (M = B, Al and Ga) was calculated by DFT (B3PW91-D3) and it was shown that in the case of the Al reagent, the carbonyl substrate binds irreversibly and inhibits catalysis by generating a stable carbonyl adduct. In contrast, the reduced electrophilicity of B(C6F5)(3) disfavors the binding of the carbonyl substrate and increases the concentration of an activated silane adduct which is the species responsible for catalytic turnover. A similar mechanism was found for both cationic and neutral Re(III) species. Further, it was shown by tuning the electrophilicity of the rhenium catalysts, conditions can be found that would enable the catalytic hydrosilylation of ketone and nitrile substrates that were unreactive in previously reported systems. Thus the mechanisms proposed in this work, lay the foundation for the design of new catalytic systems.

We report an efficient catalytic protocol that chemo-selectively reduces nitroarenes to arylamines, by using methylhydrazine as a reducing agent in combination with the easily synthesized and robust catalyst tris(N-heterocyclic thioamidate) Co(III) complex [Co(kappa S,N-tfmp2S)(3)], tfmp2S = 4-(trifluoromethyl)-pyrimidine-2-thiolate. A series of arylamines and heterocyclic amines were formed in excellent yields and chemoselectivity. High conversion yields of nitroarenes into the corresponding amines were observed by using polar protic solvents, such as MeOH and ‘PrOH. Among several hydrogen donors that were examined, methylhydrazine demonstrated the best performance. Preliminary mechanistic investigations, supported by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, suggest a cooperative action of methylhydrazine and [Co(kappa S,N-tfmp2S)(3)] via a coordination activation pathway that leads to the formation of a reduced cobalt species, responsible for the catalytic transformation. In general, the corresponding N-arylhydroxylamines were identified as the sole intermediates. Nevertheless, the corresponding nitrosoarenes can also be formed as intermediates, which, however, are rapidly transformed into the desired arylamines in the presence of methylhydrazine through a noncatalytic path. On the basis of the observed high chemoselectivity and yields, and the fast and clean reaction processes, the present catalytic system [Co(kappa S,N-tfmp2S)(3)]/MeNHNH2 shows promise for the efficient synthesis of aromatic amines that could find various industrial applications.

The Ag/AgBr/TiO2 ternary component nanotube as a heterogeneous photocatalyst was used for the solvent-free oxidation of the benzylic C(sp(3))-H bond to the corresponding carbonyl compound or the solvent-controlled selective oxidative cleavage of the CQC double bond of styrene to benzaldehyde under visible light at room temperature. A wide variety of carbonyl compounds were successfully synthesized through the developed photocatalytic process. Several advantages such as solvent-free conditions, sans additional oxidant, simple reaction, short reaction time, and easy separation of the product promote the reaction to be green. Moreover, the Ag/AgBr/TiO2 nanotubes could be used several times without reduction in their photocatalytic activity.

An efficient additive-free manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines with molecular hydrogen is described. The pre-catalyst, a well-defined bench-stable alkyl bisphosphine Mn(I) complex fac-[Mn(dpre)(CO)(3)(CH3)] (dpre=1,2-bis(di-n-propylphosphino)ethane), undergoes CO migratory insertion into the manganese-alkyl bond to form acyl complexes which upon hydrogenolysis yields the active coordinatively unsaturated Mn(I) hydride catalyst [Mn(dpre)(CO)(2)(H)]. A range of aromatic and aliphatic nitriles were efficiently and selectively converted into primary amines in good to excellent yields. The hydrogenation of nitriles proceeds at 100 degrees C with a catalyst loading of 2 mol % and a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar. Mechanistic insights are provided by means of DFT calculations.

The effect of nanoporous structure on the catalytic activity of palladium catalysts for hydrogenation of nitro compounds was investigated. The order of the catalytic activity of the six types of nanoporous palladium (PdNPore) catalysts produced was very similar to the order of their specific surface area. Compared with other catalysts synthesized in this study, the PdNPore catalyst (Pd86Al14) with a ligament size of 20 nm and specific surface area of 40.81 m(2) g(-1)exhibited relatively high activity. The hydrogenation reactions of various nitro compounds proceeded smoothly with good functional group tolerance in the presence of this PdNPore catalyst under mild conditions. Moreover, the PdNPore catalyst could be simply recovered and reused several times without any loss of activity.

A simple and efficient continuous flow methodology has been developed for hydrogenation and reductive deuteration of nitriles to yield primary amines and also valuable alpha,alpha-dideutero analogues. Raney nickel proved to be a useful catalyst for the transformation of a wide range of nitriles under reasonably mild conditions with excellent deuterium incorporation (>90 %) and quantitative conversion. Among known model compounds, three new deuterated primary amines were prepared. The large-scale synthesis of deuterated tryptamine was also carried out to deliver 1.1 g product under flow conditions.

A novel diamine monomer 4-(4-diethylaminophenyl)-2,6-bis(4-aminophenyl)pyridine (APAP) was successfully synthesized, and then a series of poly(pyridine imide)s was prepared from APAP with five commercial dianhydrides: pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3,4,4-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 3,3,4,4-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and 4,4-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) via a two-step solution polycondensation method. The structure of APAP was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, and MS. The resulting polymers have good solubility in polar solvents, such as NMP, DMF, and DMSO. Furthermore, they exhibited outstanding thermal stability. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of polymers range from 326 to 346 degrees C, and the temperature at 5 % and 10 % weight loss in the range of 527 degrees C to 570 degrees C and 550 degrees C to 601 degrees C, respectively. Moreover, they also presented excellent hydrophobicity with contact angels in the range of 88.4 degrees to 94.0 degrees.
