Also, the formation of aminium radical cations (ARCs) of anilines bearing alkyl substituents is plagued by the ARC’s tendency to instantaneously convert to alpha-amino radicals or iminium ions. We present a readily available reagent combination that addresses both challenges, and thus allows for an oxyamination with N-alkylanilines via ARCs as the crucial reactive intermediates and excellent diastereoselectivity.

A palette of commonly used directing groups, including various pharmaceutically relevant nitrogen-containing heterocycles, are quantitatively ranked based on the results of intermolecular hydrogen isotope exchange competition reactions using two iridium complexes: [Ir(COD)(IMes)(PPh3)][BArF24] and [IrCl(COD)(IMes)]. The directing group power scales that have been constructed from these data reveal a wide range of reactivity covering four orders of magnitude. Intramolecular competition experiments have demonstrated that the obtained reactivity scale provides accurate predictions of regioselectivity within molecules with multiple competing directing groups. This work contributes to our understanding and control of regioselectivity in metal-catalysed C-H activation reactions.

A mild and green methodology for the regiodivergent functionalization of isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-diones under aerobic conditions was developed. A scalable synthetic method is described for both the preparation of ultrasmall palladium nanoparticles and their subsequent use in catalyzing an alpha-arylation reaction of nitriles in aqueous micelles. This method involves the intermediacy of carbanions or keteniminates, which are presumably stabilized by the micellar environment rather than being quenched with water. These Pd nanoparticles are thoroughly characterized. Mechanistic studies using P-31 NMR spectroscopy revealed the binding of phosphine ligand with the Pd surface and control experiment confirmed the zero-oxidation state of palladium. The scope of the transformation is demonstrated over 35 examples, including one at 50 g scale.

A new heterogeneous catalyst for the solvent-free efficient oxidation of alcohols has been developed for a sustainable future with a green reaction technology. This work presents the additive and solvent-free catalytic conversions of primary and secondary alcohols as well as diols into their corresponding carbonyl compounds in moderate to excellent yields. The developed catalyst system is green as it oxidises alcohols under solvent-free conditions and uses simple atmospheric oxygen as the oxidising agent. We have experimentally proved that the alcohol oxidation reaction proceeds through an aerobic oxidative pathway. The double perovskite oxide catalyst CaLaScRuO(6+delta)was prepared by the conventional solid-state method. The crystal structure was refined and characterized thoroughly to observe the effect of mixed valent Ru5+/Ru(4+)ions in the oxygen-rich disordered structure. The conversion of diols into four-, five- and six-membered lactones can enhance the novelty of the present catalyst. The catalyst was found to be very selective for the alcohol oxidation and resulted in the oxidised product without affecting the other functional groups present in the aromatic ring. A reaction mechanism has been proposed for understanding the possible role of mixed metals in heterogeneous catalysis.
