A brick pavement, tramped by humans, is exposed to atmospheric elements, thus allowing cyanobacteria and algae to colonise. In this article, we report on the factors that contribute to the slipperiness of a brick pavement at the University of Venda in the Limpopo province of the South Africa. Samples were collected from brick surfaces either colonised by green algae (treated) or not (control). The samples were acid-digested and analysed for metals by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP MS) in parts per billion (ppb). The treated bricks, with green algae, had average high metal contents (ppb): Al 9456.02, Ti 731.23, V 46.44, Cr 78.85, Mn 862.93, Fe 16295.18, Co 23.57, Ni 59.36, Cu 66.31, Zn 160.57, As 7.92, Se 10.45, Mo 6.74, Cd 5.19, Sn 4.65, Sb 2.31 and Pb 19.51. In contrast, control bricks had a low average of metal content (ppb) as follows: Al 2.99, Ti 0.28, V 4.04, Cr 1.42, Mn 4.29, Fe 20.89, Co 0.36, Ni 2.74, Cu 5.64, Zn 4.21, As 0.56, Se <3.00, Mo 0.88, Cd 0.01, Sn 1.05, Sb 0.04 and Pb 0.04. Other factors that promote algae colonisation include high solar radiation, neutral pH, nutrients, low electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids. The reduction of nitroarenes is the most efficient route for the preparation of aromatic primary amines. These reductions are generally performed in the presence of heterogeneous transition metal catalysts, which are rather efficient but long and tedious to prepare. In addition, they contain very expensive metals that are in most cases difficult to reuse. Therefore, the development of efficient, easily accessible and reusable Pd catalysts obtained rapidly from safe and non-toxic starting materials was implemented in this report. Two bottom-up synthesis methods were used, the first consisted in the impregnation of a micro/mesoporous carbon support with a Pd salt solution, followed by thermal reduction (at 300, 450 or 600 degrees C) while the second involved a direct synthesis based on the co-assembly and pyrolysis (600 degrees C) of a mixture of a phenolic precursor, glyoxal, a surfactant and a Pd salt. The obtained composites possess Pd nanoparticles (NPs) of tunable sizes (ranging from 1-2 to 7.0 nm) and homogeneously distributed in the carbon framework (pores/walls). It turned out that they were successfully used for mild and environment-friendly hydrogenations of nitroarenes at room temperature under H-2(1 atm) in EtOH in the presence of only 5 mequiv. of supported Pd. The determinations of the optimal characteristics of the catalysts constituted a second objective of this study. It was found that the activity of the catalysts was strongly dependent on the Pd NPs sizes,i.e., catalysts bearing small Pd NPs (1.2 nm obtained at 300 degrees C and 3.4 nm obtained at 450 degrees C) exhibited an excellent activity, while those containing larger Pd NPs (6.4 nm and 7.0 nm obtained at 600 degrees C, either by indirect or direct methods) were not active. Moreover, the possibility to reuse the catalysts was shown to be dependent on the surface chemistry of the Pd NPs: the smallest Pd NPs are prone to oxidation by air and their surface was gradually covered by a PdO shell decreasing their activity during reuse. A good compromise between intrinsic catalytic activity (i.e. during first use) and possibility of reuse was found in the catalyst made by impregnation followed by reduction at 450 degrees C since the hydrogenation could be performed in only 2 h in EtOH or even in water. The catalyst was quantitatively recovered after reaction by filtration, used at least 7 times with no loss of efficiency. Advantageously, almost Pd-free primary aromatic amines were obtained since the Pd leaching was very low (<0.1% of the introduced amount). Compared to numerous reports from the literature, the catalysts described here were both easily accessible from eco-friendly precursors and very active for hydrogenations under mild and green reaction conditions. We report an efficient HCl center dot DMPU assisted one-pot conversion of aldehydes into nitriles. The use of HCl center dot DMPU as both an acidic source as well as a non-nucleophilic base constitutes an environmentally mild alternative for the preparation of nitriles. The synthesis, optical properties, theoretical calculations, and antibacterial activities of a series of new red heterocyclic dyes derived from imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine are presented. 3-(Hydroxyimino)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2(3H)-ylidene)-1-arylethanones are obtained from the reaction of 3-nitroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine with substituted acetophenone derivatives in good yields (65%-72%). The structures are confirmed by spectral and analytical data, and the optical properties of the dyes are characterized by spectrophotometry. Density functional theory calculations are performed to provide the optimized geometries and relevant frontier orbitals. Calculated electronic absorption spectra are also obtained by the time-dependent density functional theory method. Moreover, the antibacterial activities (minimum inhibitory concentration) of the new dyes against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species are determined (minimum inhibitory concentration: 5-200 mu g mL(-1)).

The title compound, C23H15NO3, adopts an s-cis conformation with respect to the ethylene C=C and carbonyl C=O double bonds in the enone unit. The molecule is significantly twisted with a dihedral angle of 48.63 (14)degrees between the anthracene ring system and the benzene ring. In the crystal, molecules are linked into inversion dimers with an R-2(2)(10) graph-set motif via pairs of C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. The intermolecular interactions were analysed and quantified by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The molecular structure was optimized and a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap of 2.55 eV was obtained using the DFT method at the B3LYP/6-311 G++(d,p) level of theory. This value is in close agreement with the experimental value of 2.52 eV obtained from the UV-vis analysis. The crystal used was a two-component merohedral twin with a refined ratio of 0.1996 (16):0.8004 (16).

In this work, a series of diaryl benzo[b][1,4]thiazepine derivatives D1-D36 were synthesized and screened as tubulin polymerization inhibitors with anti-tumor potency. They were designed by introducing the seven member ring benzothiazepine as the linker for CA-4 modification for the first time. Among them, the hit compound D8 showed potential on inhibiting the growth of several cancer cell lines (IC50 values: 1.48 mu M for HeLa, 1.47 mu M for MCF-7, 1.52 mu M for HT29 and 1.94 mu M for A549), being comparable with the positive controls Colchicine and CA-4P. The calculated IC50 value of D8 as an tubulin polymerization inhibitor was 1.20 mu M. The results of the flow cytometry assay revealed that D8 could induce the mitotic catastrophe and the death of living cancer cells. D8 also indicated the anti-vascular activity. The possible binding pattern was implied by docking simulation, inferring the possibility of introducing interactions with the nearby tubulin chain. Since the novel structural trial has been conducted with preliminary discussion, this work might stimulate new ideas in further modification of tubulin-related anti-cancer agents and therapeutic approaches.
