Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN for short) is a compelling visible-light responsive photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is low due to the random carrier transfer in planes and insufficient redox potential. Herein, we build oxygen functional group modified sodium-doped carbon nitride (OH/Na co-functionalized carbon nitride) to promote directional transfer of charge carriers for acceleration of separation and enhance redox potential for efficient oxidation of NO in air. Specifically, the function of sodium atoms could control the directional transfer of random carriers from the intralayer to the oxygen functional group-modified surface for the purpose of effectively reducing photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Meanwhile, the modification by oxygen-containing functional groups could adjust the band structure of CN, thereby increasing the oxidation-reduction potential of NO in the photocatalyst. The transformation pathways and reaction mechanism of photocatalytic NO oxidation on CN and OH/Na co-functionalized carbon nitride have also been explicated by ESR spectroscopy and in situ DRIFTS and compared. This work provides a new method for simultaneously controlling the random transfer of carriers and adjusting the energy band structure of CN to optimize its photocatalytic efficiency. It is also possible to extend this strategy to improve the performance of other 2D layered catalysts for photocatalytic oxidation.

The applications of a new supported tribromide reagent based on poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide) resin (Amberlite 717) were reported. The divergent formation of N-alkenylindole derivatives occurs by switching to the use of ZnBr2 as the catalyst under the same reaction conditions. Conversely, only 4-methylsubstituted quinoline derivatives were isolated by reacting 2-ethynylanilines and/or 2-trimethylsylilanilines with ketones in all examined cases.

In the present study, an innovative cold plasma treatment was used as a tool to fortify the white rice. The amounts of ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid were optimized for improving the bioavailability of iron. White rice samples were treated with plasma at a constant voltage of 20 kV for varying time (10 min and 15 min). The exposure time of plasma was selected based on the surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in the characteristics of hydrophilicity, surface energy, cooking time and hardness of plasma-treated rice. Plasma treated rice was fortified with the optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid solution. Optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid per 100 g of rice (862.93 mg and 1398.27 mg) were found by conducing experiments using Central Composite Design of Response Surface Methodology. Further, rice was blended with untreated rice in the ratio of 1:100 and 1:200 and was packed in LDPE and PP pouches and was stored at ambient temperature for further storage analysis. The in vitro bioavailability of iron was significantly higher in the plasma-treated fortified rice at both 1.35 and 7.5 pH than in the control sample, and plasma treatment significantly reduced the rate of oxidation of iron during storage.

Different compounds have been investigated as potent drugs for trypanosomiasis treatment, but no new drug has been marketed in the past 3 decades. 4-Thiazolidinone/thiazole as privileged structures and thiosemicarbazides cyclic analogs are well known scaffolds in novel antitrypanosomal agent design. We present here the design and synthesis of new hybrid molecules bearing thiazolidinone/thiazole cores linked by the hydrazone group with various molecular fragments. Structure optimization led to compounds with phenyl-indole or phenyl-imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole moieties showing excellent anti-trypanosomal activity towards Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Biological study allowed identifying compounds with the submicromolar levels of IC50, good selectivity indexes and relatively low cytotoxicity upon human primary fibroblasts as well as low acute toxicity. Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials have exhibited promising applications in various fields. In this work, sulfur, nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (SNCs) with abundant pore structure were prepared by pyrolysis of sulfur, nitrogen-containing porous organic polymers (POPs) mixed with nano-CaCO3 at high temperature. Among the resultant materials, SNC-Ca-850 possesses a relatively high level of doped heteroatoms and exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds. It is noteworthy that nano-CaCO3 increases the doped sulfur content in the synthesized carbon materials to a large extent and impacts the existence modes of sulfur. In addition, it enhances the porous structure and specific surface area of the resultant SNCs significantly. This work provides a viable strategy to promote the doping of sulfur into carbon materials during the pyrolysis process.

A metal-free sequential one-pot three-component protocol is described for the synthesis of C3-functionalized imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines. A successive construction of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine followed by iodine-catalysed sulfenylation has been achieved in a one-pot operation from readily available alpha-bromomethyl ketones, 2-aminopyridines and thiosulfonates. An immense array of 3-sulfenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines were obtained in good to high yields. Also, the method extended for the synthesis of C3-halogenated imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines using sodium halides in the presence of K2S2O8. Notably, the reaction between alpha-bromomethyl ketones and 2-aminopyridines in the presence of K2S2O8 to yield 3-bromo-2-aryl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines, thus implies alpha-bromomethyl ketones also served as brominating agent. Overall, the present sequential one-pot protocol is straightforward, operationally simple, tolerates a broad range of functional groups, and is reliable for gram-scale experiments.
