In this study, a new heterobimetallic Mo(VI)-V(V) organosilicon Schiff base complex has been prepared and characterized by different techniques, such as FTIR, Raman, MS, ICP-AES, TGA, and XPS. The bimetallic nanocomplex, revealed by TEM images, showed high oxidation stability and desired activity in the aerobic oxidation of a structurally diverse set of benzylic alcohols in ethanol as a safe solvent. Further, oxidation of benzylic hydrocarbons successfully occurred, producing the target compounds in high yields and excellent selectivities. Our results demonstrated a cooperative effect between Mo(VI) and V(V) as redox active sites in an organosilicon Schiff base framework. A facile and practical reusability of the solid catalyst at the end of the reaction was observed.

In this study, a new series of N-(di or trimethoxyaryl)-5-arylisoxazole-3-carboxamide derivatives were synthesized and evaluated against human breast cancer cell lines including MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and T-47D. Among the synthesized compounds, 5-(m-tolyl)-N-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)isoxazole-3-carboxamide (8f) showed significant cytotoxicity against all three cell lines comparing with etoposide as the reference drug. Also, Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide and acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining assay were performed to validate apoptotic activity of compound 8f. The results confirmed induction of apoptosis at early stage.

Background: Metformin has anticarcinogenic properties and is also known to inhibit the sonic hedgehog pathway, but population-based studies analyzing the potential protective effect for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are needed. Objectives: To delineate the association between metformin use and invasive SCC, SCC in situ (SCCis), and BCC. Methods: A population-based case-control study design was employed using all 6880 patients diagnosed in Iceland between 2003-2017 with first-time BCC, SCCis, or invasive SCC, and 69,620 population controls. Multivariate odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression. Results: Metformin was associated with a lower risk of developing BCC (OR, 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61-0.83), even at low doses. No increased risk of developing SCC was observed. SCCis risk was mildly elevated in the 501-1500 daily dose unit category (OR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.00-1.96). Limitations: This study was retrospective in nature with the inability to adjust for ultraviolet exposure, Fitzpatrick skin type, and comorbidities. Conclusion: Metformin is associated with decreased risk of BCC development, even at low doses. Metformin might have potential as a chemoprotective agent for patients at high risk of BCC, although this will need confirmation in future studies.

The present study examines the significance of various non-covalent interactions in the supramolecular assembly of (E)-1-(1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethylidene)-2-phenylhydrazine 1c and (E)-3-bromo-N’-(1-phenylethylidene)benzohydrazide 2d. The synthesized compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The topology of the supramolecular assemblies was controlled by various non-covalent interactions including classical hydrogen bonding, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and Br center dot center dot center dot Br interactions which were examined in detail using several theoretical methods and DFT calculations. The optimized geometric parameters of compounds 1c and 2d were calculated using density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP) quantum chemical method with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set using the crystallographic coordinates. Additionally, fragments contributing to the HOMO and LUMO molecular orbitals were investigated at the same level of theory. The nature and various types of intermolecular interactions in the crystal structures was also investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The synthesized Schiff bases were also studied for their potential as drugs and physicochemical properties. Bioevaluation against four cancer cell lines (NCI-H460, NCI-H460/Bcl-2, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) showed that compound 1c was a more potent inducer of toxicity compared to 2d. The putative binding modes of the bioactive Schiff bases were investigated using molecular docking tools and the results revealed that both the inhibitors were stabilized in the active pocket of the enzyme via the formation of various interactions with the key amino acid residues. Reduction of various azides using Na2S has been accomplished in water, and, in situ, the resulting amines on reaction with various ketones lead to pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines in one pot. Thus, a number of new trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine compounds have been prepared and screened for antimicrobial activity against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. A good number of compounds, 4a, 4b, 4d, 4f, 4i, 4k, 4l, 4m, 4r and 4s, were found to possess promising activity. Notably, Na2S on hydrolysis in water generates H2S and NaOH, which facilitate the reduction of azides followed by intramolecular cyclization leading to the title compounds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the synthesis of the title compounds in aqueous medium in a one-pot reaction.

An efficient and facile approach has been described for the synthesis of a new series of 1-amino-2-oxo-nicotinonitriles and their sulfonamides under microwave and ultrasonic irradiation. The desired compounds 4 a-l were obtained via condensation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde, aryl or heteroaryl methyl ketone and cyanoacetohydrazide in the presence of catalytic piperidine under three synthetic methodologies (namely, conventional method, ultrasonic and microwave irradiation), the best results (short reaction times, pure products, high yield) were obtained by ultrasonic irradiation. Sulfonamides 5 a-f resulted via reaction of amines 4 a-e and 4 j with benzene sulfonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. The synthesized compounds give no significant results when investigated against Gm (+ve) and Gm (-ve) bacteria, and fungi strains.
