We report an efficient HCl center dot DMPU assisted one-pot conversion of aldehydes into nitriles. The use of HCl center dot DMPU as both an acidic source as well as a non-nucleophilic base constitutes an environmentally mild alternative for the preparation of nitriles. Our protocol proceeds smoothly without the use of toxic reagents and metal catalysts. Diverse functionalized aromatic, aliphatic and allylic aldehydes incorporating various functional groups were successfully converted to nitriles in excellent to quantitative yields. This protocol is characterized by a broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and high scalability.

A non-noble heterogeneous catalyst, ultra dispersed Co anchored on ordered porous nitrogen-riched carbon (CoN@PCN) was fabricated through a sacrificial-template pyrolysis strategy, in which SBA-15 and 1, 10-phenanthroline were employed as the hard template and ligand, respectively. Co was ultra dispersed owing to the confinement effect of SBA-15 and the strong coordination effect of Co with phenanthroline. The CoN@PCN displayed excellent catalytic activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes with ammonia-borane as hydrogen donor under mild conditions, which can be ascribed to the ultra dispersed Co sites, high adsorption ability of the catalyst for ammonia-borane, large specific surface area and abundant porous structure of CoN@PCN. Based on the results of density functional theory calculations, the catalytic mechanism of CoN@PCN for the hydrogenation reaction was proposed. The recycled CoN@PCN had no obvious change in catalytic performance after five consecutive cycles, indicating its durability and recyclability.

On the pharmaceutical account of the reported anticancer activity of benzothiazole derivatives, differently substituted benzothiazole derivatives 2a-c to 34a,b, attached at 2-position to different heterocyclic moieties, were synthesized via different chemical reactions. A series of robust metallo-aerogels are readily fabricated by pyrolysis of xerogels derived from chitosan-metal (M = Fe, Co, Ni) hydrogels. Owing to the strong coordination between metal ions and the functional groups (NH2 and OH) of chitosan, metallo-aerogels consisting of encapsulated metal-nanoparticles (MNPs) by graphite shells were obtained, as supported by various characterizations including high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman. The resulting metallo-aerogels could be functioned as highly stable, efficient and selective nanocatalysts towards the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to amines at low catalyst loading (1.2 mol.%-2.4 mol.%). Remarkably, the metallo-aerogels could be reused for more than 30 runs without obvious loss of activity and selectivity. These distinguished performances were attributed to the graphitic shells formed during the pyrolysis, which hampered the possible aggregation of MNPs, prevented metal leaching and increased their stability.

Herein we report a class of CO2-folded single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) that can function as recyclable, function-intensified carboxylase mimics. Lewis pair polymers containing bulky Lewis acidic and basic groups as the precursor, can bind CO(2)to drive an intramolecular folding into SCNPs, in which CO(2)as the folded nodes can form gas-bridged bonds. Such bridging linkages highly activate CO2, which endows the SCNPs with extraordinary catalytic ability that can not only catalyze CO2-insertion of C(sp(3))-H for imitating the natural enzyme’s function, it can also act on non-natural carboxylation pathways for C(sp(2)and sp)-H substrates. The nanocatalysts are of highly catalytic efficiency and recyclability, and can work at room temperature and near ambient CO(2)condition, inspiring a new approach to sustainable C(1)utilization.

Chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines is of great importance for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and dyes. In this study, a series of metal-free N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) have been prepared by the carbonization of in situ polymerized pyrrole on CNTs. The concentration of pyrrole, pyrolysis temperature, and the outside diameter of CNTs were investigated to improve the catalytic performance. As characterized by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the optimal catalyst (NCNTs-800) possessed a unique structure doped with the same content of pyrrolic N and graphitic N. The activity and selectivity of NCNTs-800 have been evaluated for the selective hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes. Highly selective hydrogenation of the nitro group of 12 different substrates has been achieved on NCNTs-800, even in the presence of a fragile iodo group. The hydrogenation reaction on N-doped CNTs from polypyrrole involved a mixture of different hydrogen species including nonpolar H radicals. In addition, stability and recyclability of NCNTs-800 have been tested.

This work illustrates direct evidence of the formation of close-contact Rh-SnO2 heteroaggregate interfaces, and their enhanced catalytic hydrogenation performance is also demonstrated. Alumina-supported Rh-SnO2 heteroaggregate nanocatalysts were prepared by in situ transformation of Rh@Sn core-shell nanostructures. Various characterization techniques, especially the studies of high angle annular dark field scanning transition electron microscopy with phase mappings, confirm that Rh-SnO2 close-contact heteroaggragate nanostructures were obtained by in situ calcination and following reduction of Rh@Sn core-shell nanoparticle precursors. The catalytic studies for hydrogenations of various substituted nitroaromatics show that the Rh-SnO2/Al2O3 heteroaggregate nanocatalysts not only improve the catalytic conversions but also enhance the catalytic selectivity. The combination of characterization and catalytic studies suggests that a synergistic effect originated from close-contact Rh-SnO2 heteroaggregate interfaces exists in the Rh-SnO2 system, which enhances their catalytic hydrogenation performance.

Hydrofunctionalization, the direct addition of an X-H (e.g., X=O, N) bond across an alkene, is a desirable strategy to make heterocycles that are important structural components of naturally occurring molecules. Described here is the design and discovery of donor-acceptor-type platinum catalysts that are highly effective in both hydroalkoxylation and hydroamination of unactivated alkenes over a broad range of substrates under mild conditions. A number of alkene substitution patterns are accommodated, including tri-substituted, 1,1-disubstituted, (E)-disubstituted, (Z)-disubstituted and even mono-substituted double bonds. Detailed mechanistic investigations suggest a plausible pathway that includes an unexpected dissociation/re-association of the electron-deficient ligand to form an alkene-bound donor-acceptor-type intermediate. These mechanistic studies help understand the origins of the high reactivity exhibited by the catalytic system, and provide a foundation for the rational design of chiral catalysts towards asymmetric hydrofunctionalization reactions. The direct addition of an O-H (hydroalkoxylation) or an N-H (hydroamination) bond across an alkene is a useful strategy to access biologically relevant heterocycles. Dementia is a cognitive disorder mostly associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in addition to being seen in many other diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). The limited number of drugs is not sufficient to provide adequate improvement to increase the quality of life of patients suffering from this symptom; therefore, all treatment options should be evaluated in detail. In this study, new molecules, [2-(4-(2/3/4-substituted phenyl)piperazin-1-yl)-4-phenylthiazol-5-yl][3/4-substituted phenyl]methanone derivatives (1-44), were obtained and analyzed in terms of their anticholinesterase activities. Kinetic mode and molecular interactions were also evaluated. An enzyme inhibition study was undertaken on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) using the Ellman method. Maestro program was used in molecular modeling studies. Forty-four compounds were evaluated on AChE and BChE enzymes at 10(-3) and 10(-4) concentrations. The inhibition concentrations were calculated as 0.268 mu M to 2.104 mu M for six compounds (4, 5, 16, 27, 37, and 38) on AChE. Compound 5 including the 4-methoxy substituent (IC50: 0.268 mu M) and compound 38 containing the 4-methoxy and 3-methyl substituents (IC50: 0.286 mu M) showed the highest AChE inhibitory activity. They were further examined in terms of hydrogen bonding with Arg296 and Ar-Ar interaction with Trp286. The activity of compound 5 was also assessed in mixed-type kinetic mode.
