The presented study comprises the synthesis of a new series of ethylated sulfonamides in which 1,4- benzodioxane moietyhas been incorporated. The reaction of 1,4-benzodioxane-6-amine (1) with ethane sulfonyl chloride (2) yielded N-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[1,4]dioxin-6-yl)ethanesulfonamide (3), which further on treatment with various alkyl/aralkyl halides, 4a-r, in N,N?-dimethylformamide (DMF) and in the presence of lithium hydride (LiH) acting as a weak base and catalyst;yielded derivativesofN-alkyl/aralkyl substituted N-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[1,4]dioxin-6- yl)ethanesulfonamides (5a-r). The characterization of these derivatives was carried out by different spectroscopic techniques like infra red, proton-NMR and mass spectrometry; then screened against various enzymes i.e. acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, lipoxygenase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes and five different bacterial strains. The synthesized compounds were found to be good inhibitors of lipoxygenase but moderate inhibitors of AChE, BChE and a-glucosidase; whereas compounds 3, 5a, 5f, 5n and 5r were found good antibacterial compounds. The interaction between inhibitors and target enzymes (cholinestrases and lipoxygenase) was computationally observed which correlated with the experimental results.

Thermochemical conversion processes such as supercritical fluid extraction are used for producing biofuels from biomass. Supercritical fluid extraction process is decomposition process of lignocellulose or other organic materials thermally under supercritical conditions at 250-400 C temperature range under high pressure (4-5 MPa). In this study, the supercritical fluid extraction was used to produce bio-oils from algae. Supercritical fluid extraction trials were performed in a cylindrical reactor (75 mL) in organic solvents (acetone, ethanol and isopropanol) under supercritical conditions with (ferric chloride, potassium hydroxide) and without catalyst at the temperatures of 255, 275 and 295 C. The effects of process variables including temperature and catalyst on product yields were investigated. The produced liquids at 295 C in supercritical liquefaction were analyzed and characterized by elemental, GC-MS and FT-IR. 160, 122 and 108 different types of compounds were identified by GC-MS obtained in acetone, ethanol and isopropanol respectively. Bio-oils from supercritical liquefaction were composed of various organics including aromatics, nitrogenated and oxygenated compounds. Bio-oils obtained from supercritical liquefaction were found to have higher calorific values and superior fuel properties compared to feedstock.

Similarly, the ketone having an o-CF3 group gave the coupling product 9 in 92% yield. However, ortho substituents such as OMe, F, and CN, seem to react with and kill the catalyst so that no efficient reaction was attained. In the cases of the reactions of p-methoxy- and p-fluoroacetophenones with 2, the corresponding 1 : 2 addition products were obtained as the major product. In the cases of m-substituted acetophenones, two different C-H bonds at the ortho positions are available. The C-C bond formation preferentially occurred at the sterically less congested positions. Exceptions are the reactions of m-methoxy- and m-fluoroacetophenones, in which the C-C bond formation took place preferentially at the more congested position. This may be due to the coordination of oxygen or fluorine atom to ruthenium. The factors controlling these selectivities are discussed.
