(+)-Usnic acid, a product of secondary metabolism in lichens, has displayed a broad range of biological properties such as antitumor, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and insecticidal activities. Interested by these pharmacological activities and to tap into its potential, we herein present the synthesis and biological evaluation of new usnic acid enaminone-conjugated 1,2,3-triazoles 10-44 as antimycobacterial agents. (+)-Usnic acid was condensed with propargyl amine to give usnic acid enaminone 8 with a terminal ethynyl moiety. It was further reacted with various azides A1-A35 under copper catalysis to give triazoles 10-44 in good yields. Among the synthesized compounds, saccharin derivative 36 proved to be the most active analogue, inhibiting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) at an MIC value of 2.5 mu M. Analogues 16 and 27, with 3,4-difluorophenacyl and 2-acylnaphthalene units, respectively, inhibited Mtb at MIC values of 5.4 and 5.3 mu M, respectively. Among the tested Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, the new derivatives were active on Bacillus subtilis, with compounds 18 [3-(trifluoromethyl)phenacyl] and 29 (N-acylmorpholinyl) showing inhibitory concentrations of 41 and 90.7 mu M, respectively, while they were inactive on the other tested bacterial strains. Overall, the study presented here is useful for converting natural (+)-usnic acid into antitubercular and antibacterial agents via incorporation of enaminone and 1,2,3-triazole functionalities.

The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) was examined by using the extracts of different plants; cloves, white mulberry, black cumin seed, blackthorn, dark grape, and rosehip. The reduction efficiency of extracts was confirmed by XRD and spectroscopic analysis. The layered structure of reduced graphene and graphene nanocomposite decorated with palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) was observed by electron microscopy techniques. This nanocomposite considered to be an active-selective catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes in organic synthesis. This efficient catalyst can provide to develop clean, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient production routes in industrial organic chemistry. Although compounds with a 2-benzoylbenzoxazole motif are biologically relevant, there are only a few methods for synthesizing them, most of which relied on multistep process or required substrates bearing activating groups. Herein, we report an efficient method for the synthesis of such compounds by direct reactions of o-aminophenols with acetophenones promoted by sulfur in DMSO. The reaction was found to proceed via a Willgerodt rearrangement-type benzoxazolation of acetophenones followed by a benzylic oxidation to reinstall the carbonyl function. This method has a broad substrate scope and good tolerance for sensitive functional groups.

Developing efficient heterogeneous catalytic systems based on easily available materials and molecular oxygen for the selective oxidation of alkylarenes is highly desirable. In the present research, NiMn hydrotalcite (Ni2Mn-LDH) has been found as an efficient catalyst in the oxidation of alkylarenes using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant without any additive. Impressive catalytic performance, excellent stability and recyclability, broad applicable scope and practical potential for the catalytic system have been observed. Mn3+ species was proposed to be the efficient active site, and Ni2+ played an important role in stabilizing the Mn3+ species in the hydrotalcite structure. The kinetic study showed that the aerobic oxidation of diphenylmethane is a first-order reaction over Ni2Mn-LDH with the activation energy (E-a) and pre-exponential factor (A(0)) being 85.7 kJ mol(-1) and 1.8 x 109 min(-1), respectively. The Gibbs free energy (Delta G(not equal)) was determined to be -10.4 kJ mol(-1) K-1 for the oxidation based on Eyring-Polanyi equation, indicating the reaction is exergonic. The mechanism study indicated that the reaction proceeded through both radical and carbocation intermediates. The two species were then trapped by molecular oxygen and H2O or hydroxyl species, respectively, to yield the corresponding products. The present research might provide information for constructing highly efficient and stable active site for the catalytic aerobic oxidation based on available and economic material.

Aiming at alpha-arylation of glycine derivative for rapid access to indolylglycines without the aid of bases, a chemically robust and two-dimensional COF is prepared. Integration of [2,2 ‘]bipyridyl (Bpy) unit benefits active homogeneous complex Ru(Bpy)22+ to anchor over the framework backbone to devise Ru-COF that acts as unprecedented visible light photocatalyst towards cross-dehydrogenative coupling of secondary amines with indoles in excellent yield at room temperature, under aerobic condition. Ru-COF shows admirable reusability and superior activity to that of Ru(Bpy)3Cl2, while substrate variation studies delineate wide ranges of functional group tolerance. To the best of Ru-COF, atom-economic C-H functionalization is realized as iminium ion is in situ generated. The photocatalytic route is detailed from astute modulation of optical band-gap in light of density-functional theory studies and experimental results, which validates single-electron-transfer pathway.
