In the present study, an innovative cold plasma treatment was used as a tool to fortify the white rice. The amounts of ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid were optimized for improving the bioavailability of iron. White rice samples were treated with plasma at a constant voltage of 20 kV for varying time (10 min and 15 min). The exposure time of plasma was selected based on the surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in the characteristics of hydrophilicity, surface energy, cooking time and hardness of plasma-treated rice. Plasma treated rice was fortified with the optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid solution. Optimum concentrations of iron and ascorbic acid per 100 g of rice (862.93 mg and 1398.27 mg) were found by conducing experiments using Central Composite Design of Response Surface Methodology. Further, rice was blended with untreated rice in the ratio of 1:100 and 1:200 and was packed in LDPE and PP pouches and was stored at ambient temperature for further storage analysis. The in vitro bioavailability of iron was significantly higher in the plasma-treated fortified rice at both 1.35 and 7.5 pH than in the control sample, and plasma treatment significantly reduced the rate of oxidation of iron during storage.

Elemental sulfur, as a by-product of petroleum refining, is regarded as a solid waste stored in above-ground deposits due to limited existing applications, meanwhile, mercury contamination is one of the current environmental issues considering its high toxicity to the human, and how to safely dispose of hazardous waste adsorbents is still an unavoidable problem. This study addresses these need by utilizing sulfur for preparation of a polysulfide complex material to capture Hg(II) and convert the Hg(II)-containing spent adsorbent into a catalyst. Initially, the mesoporous silica was prepared and functionalized by using diatomite and APTES, then, an in-situ preparation method was applied to obtain the amine-mesoporous silica/poly(m-aminothiophenol) nanocomposite (MAP), subsequently sulfur was copolymerized with MAP and vinylic-potato starch through inverse vulcanization, forming the sulfur crosslinked polymers composite cp(MAP-S-PS). Many characterizations were employed to determine the physicochemical structure andmorphology of cp(MAP-S-PS). The adsorption study showed the cp(MAP-S-PS) exhibited the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 436.68 mg/g, good regeneration performance after 5 cycles and excellent selectivity between Hg(II) ions and common cations. Furthermore, the collected spent adsorbent cp (MAP-S-PS)/Hg(II) was reused as a catalyst for synthesis of acetophenone with 89% yield, and most of phenylacetylene derivatives were also transformed to corresponding acetophenone in good yields. The use of ubiquities elements such as iron instead of expensive precious metals as catalysts is one goal toward realizing environmentally benign synthetic chemistry. Here, we report that porous FeO(OH) dispersed on Mg-Al hydrotalcite acts as a bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst in the one-pot synthesis of 2-substituted quinoline derivatives through dehydrogenative oxidation-cyclization reactions. The catalyst was prepared by a simple grafting method using FeCl3 and Mg-Al hydrotalcite. The prepared porous FeO(OH) possesses a higher surface area than those previously reported for alpha-FeO(OH) particles. The one-pot quinoline synthesis proceeded effectively under non-noble-metal catalysis in air without requiring additional homogeneous bases or solvents.

In attempt to take advantages of naturally occurring compounds for the catalysis, a novel composite composed of beta-cyclodextrin, dendrimer and bentonite clay is fabricated and utilized as a support for the stabilization of Pd nanoparticles. To prepare the support, bentonite is amino functionalized and then successively reacted with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and ethylenediamine to furnish a dendrimer of generation II on bentonite. Afterwards, the terminal functionalities of the dendrimer were adorned with cyclodextrin. Bentonite played role in the hetemgenation of the catalyst and improvement of the stability of the composite while, cyclodextrins served as molecular shuttles and capping agent for the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles. Dendrimer with multi nitrogen atoms, on the other hand, improved Pd anchoring through electrostatic interactions. The catalyst was applied for the hydrogenation of nitmarenes under mild reaction condition in aqueous media in a selective manner. Notably, the catalyst could be recovered and reused repeatedly.

A new heterogeneous acid catalyst based on a natural resource, Tunisian clay (Clay-H0.5), has been prepared and characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as chemical composition, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and pore volume. Acid treatment for 0.5 h enlarged the surface area from 78.24 to 186.10 m(2)/g and pore volume (PV) from 0.186 to 0.281 cm(3)/g. The catalytic activity of this material was investigated in ketalization reaction under mild solvent-free conditions. This achieved up to 92% isolated yield for only 10 wt.% of the catalyst. This environmentally friendly method has advantages such as simple work-up procedure, avoidance of organic solvents, and good performance in ketalization reactions. Importantly, the Clay-H0.5 catalyst showed good recyclability where insignificant activity loss was exhibited even after six runs. Synthesized cyclic ketals were tested for their possible antileishmanial and antibacterial activities as well as antifungal activity. Biological screening showed that compound 11 had important antileishmanial activity against both L. major and L. infantum, while compound 14 also had significant antibacterial activity against four gram-positive and two gram-negative bacteria, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, with minimal inhibitory concentration values ranging from 15.62 mu g/mL to 125 mu g/mL.

Use of green chemistry and alternative strategies has been explored to prepare diverse organic derivatives. The combination between heterogeneous catalyst, environmentally benign reaction and high-yielding methods is gaining momentum. Herein, a defective 6-connected Hf-MOF, named Hf-BTC, was efficiently synthesized and characterized for the heterogeneous catalysis under microwave irradiation. The MOF features including structural defect, porosity, acidity, and stability was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction, N-2 sorption isotherms, acid-base titration, and thermal gravimetric analysis. In the catalytic studies, the Brunsted-Lewis dual acidic HfBTC was efficiently applied for the synthesis of the heterocyclic compounds via the microwave-assisted cycloaddition and condensation reactions. The reactions proceeded smoothly in the presence of the Hf-MOF with a broad scope of substrates provided the expected products in high to excellent yields (up to 99 %) for few minutes and the catalyst could be easily recycle over many consecutive reactions without loss of its reactivity and structure.

Unprecedentedly high enantioselectivities are obtained in the transfer hydrogenation of prochiral ketones catalyzed by a Ru complex formed insitu with chitosan chiral ligand. This biocompatible, biodegradable chiral polymer obtained from the natural chitin afforded good, up to 86% enantioselectivities, in the aqueous-phase transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone derivatives using HCOONa as hydrogen donor. Cyclic ketones were transformed in even higher, over 90%, enantioselectivities, whereas further increase, up to 97%, was obtained in the transfer hydrogenations of heterocyclic ketones. The chiral catalyst precursor prepared ex situ was examined by scanning electron microscopy, FT-mid- and -far-IR spectroscopy. The structure of the insitu formed catalyst was investigated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and using various chitosan derivatives. It was shown that a Ru pre-catalyst is formed by coordination of the biopolymer to the metal by amino groups. This precursor is transformed in water insoluble Ru-hydride complex following hydrogen donor addition. The practical value of the developed method was verified by preparing over twenty chiral alcohols in good yields and optical purities. The catalyst was applied for obtaining optically pure chiral alcohols at gram scale following a single crystallization.
