A quantitative Lewis acidity/basicity scale toward boron-centered Lewis acids has been developed based on a set of 90 experimental equilibrium constants for the reactions of triarylboranes with various O-, N-, S-, and P-centered Lewis bases in dichloromethane at 20 degrees C. Analysis with the linear free energy relationship log K-B=LA(B)+LBB allows equilibrium constants, K-B, to be calculated for any type of borane/Lewis base combination through the sum of two descriptors, one for Lewis acidity (LA(B)) and one for Lewis basicity (LBB). The resulting Lewis acidity/basicity scale is independent of fixed reference acids/bases and valid for various types of trivalent boron-centered Lewis acids. It is demonstrated that the newly developed Lewis acidity/basicity scale is easily extendable through linear relationships with quantum-chemically calculated or common physical-organic descriptors and known thermodynamic data (Delta HBF3 ). Furthermore, this experimental platform can be utilized for the rational development of borane-catalyzed reactions.

In order to introduce the concept of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an important class of predictable crystalline porous polymers, an integrated laboratory experiment for advanced organic chemistry students is reported. The importance of these kind of polymers and their multiple applications are presented as a part of key concepts in polymer and organic chemistry, bridging these disciplines to materials science. Students carry out the synthesis and characterization of an imine-linked COF and its building blocks. The polymer is formed at room temperature by using solvent-assisted synthesis and mechanochemistry. Students are trained in solid state characterization techniques, including FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), C-13 NMR cross-polarization-magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) NMR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), which are essential in the important field of reticular chemistry. Therefore, this lab experience constitutes a practical introduction to COFs.

An efficient and practical benzylic aerobic oxidation catalyzed by cheap and simple N-hydroxyimide organocatalyst has been achieved with high yields and broad substrate scope. The organocatalyst used can be recycled and reused by simple workup and only minute amount (1 mol% in most cases) of simple iron salt is used as promoter. Phenyl substrates with mild and strong electron-withdrawing group could also be oxygenated in high yields as well as other benzylic methylenes. Influence of substituents, gram-scale application, catalysts decay and general mechanism of this methodology has also been discussed.

Visible-light active, heterogeneous, and organic photocatalysts exhibit a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to classical metal-based catalysts. Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) with permanent porosity, columnar It-arrays and excellent stability, that can become an excellent platform for heterogeneous photocatalysis of organic transformations. Here we report a predesigned imine-based COF with electron donor and acceptor structure. And new framework possesses large surface area, high crystallinity, outstanding stability and broad absorption range in the visible-light region as well as good photoelectric response characteristics. Importantly, it was found to be a highly effective heterogeneous photocatalyst for reductive dehalogenation of phenacyl bromide derivatives and cc-alkylation of aldehydes under irradiation of visible-light. In addition, the COF gave good recyclability and could be reused after a simple separation manipulation. The current present still reveals a great prospect for 2D-COFs as metal-free, heterogeneous photo catalysts for organic transformations.

Anilines are the most important fine chemicals that have been widely used as the intermediates of industrial products. Herein, a new series of nanostructured Mo-based catalysts were reported, such as MoOx/ZSM-5(25), MoOx/ZSM-5(50) and MoOx/SBA-15, which can serve as efficient catalysts in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes by using hydrogen as the reducing reagent to afford functionalized anilines. Those catalysts showed both excellent activity and high chemoselectivity of the nitro group even though other reducible groups (C-X, C=C, C=O and C equivalent to N) were exiting. This protocol constitutes an economically responsible pathway for the synthesis of anilines in high yields, good functional group compatibility and high chemselectivity.

Chiral, cationic NHC-iridium complexes are introduced as catalysts for the intramolecular hydroamination reaction of unactivated aminoalkenes. The catalysts show high activity in the construction of a range of 5- and 6-membered N-heterocycles, which are accessed in excellent optical purity, with various functional groups being tolerated with this system. A series of piperine-based dienehydrazide derivatives were designed and synthesized to be used as insecticides against Culex pipiens. The chemical structure of compound 5n was confirmed by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Their insecticidal activities of synthesized compounds were tested against third-instar larval of Cx. pipiens at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 mg/mL. Among all derivatives, compounds 5a, 5b, 5f, 5g, 5m, 5n, 5o, 5p, and 5u displayed good activities. The final mortality rates at the concentration of 0.75 mg/mL after 48 h treatment, were found to be in the range from 80.00 to 83.33% and with LC50 values ranging from 0.221 to 0.094 mg/mL. These compounds demonstrated higher insecticidal activities than piperine and Deltamethrin (a commercial positive control). Molecular modelling reveals several molecular interactions between synthesized compounds and the substrate binding sits of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) that are predicted to be responsible for its binding and inhibition activity.
