A green Barluenga-Valdes cross-coupling reaction for the synthesis of 1,1-diarylethylenes using palladium catalysis has been developed. The new catalytic system based on Pd/Xphos-SO3Na or Pd/MeDavephos-CF3SO3 in PEG/H2O under microwave irradiation was found to be the best conditions for this transformation. The recyclability of the palladium catalyst system was also studied, and it was found to be active over nine runs without significant loss in its activity.

The hydrogenation of nitroarenes is one of the most important strategies for the preparation of anilines. However, it is still a great challenge to develop mild and efficient synthetic routes toward aniline synthesis, particularly those employing both non-precious metal catalysts and low-pressure H-2. Herein, we report a highly efficient protocol for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes in neutral H2O using H-2(1 atm) over a heterogeneous Zn(0) catalyst under mild conditions. The nitro groups of an array of nitroarenes can be converted into -NH(2)with up to 99% conversions and a selectivity of >99%, even when functionalized with easily reducible substituents, or in the presence of aromatic ketones or styrene. This study might open an avenue for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes over a zinc catalyst using 1 atm H-2.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a small molecule of reactive oxygen species, mainly produced by cell mitochondria, which plays an important role in physiological processes. Excess of H2O2 in normal cells could causes a variety of diseases. For that reason, it is very significant to emerge a detection method with high-precision for H2O2. Herein, we reported a structurally novel fluorescent probe, para-nitrophenyl oxoacetyl rhodamine (RhB-NIR) for the detection of H2O2 levels in living cells. The results show that the Stokes shift for RhB-NIR is 140 nm, much larger than those for other reported rodamine derivatives. RhB-NIR shows satisfactory specificity and high sensitivity for the detection of H2O2. Excellent linear relationship with H2O2 within a certain concentration range (0-10 mu M) was displayed, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 61 nM. More importantly, RhB-NIR realized fluorescence imaging of H2O2 in living cells. In addition, RhB-NIR also shows great potential for targeting mitochondria in cell colocalization experiments, in which the Pearson’s coefficient is 0.91 using Rhodamine 123 as a reference. This probe will be a promising tool for detecting H2O2 in the future research.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and graphene (GO) have been greatly utilized as supports in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, layered C3N4 polymer/graphene hybrid (CNNS/rGO(20)) with heterostructure was fabricated by a hydrothermal method followed by loading Pd nanoparticles on the hybrid. The palladium was well dispersed uniformly (1.31 nm) owing to the layered and porous heterostructure of CNNS/rGO(20). The obtained catalyst was used for the transfer hydrogenation of a series of nitro-compounds to give the corresponding aromatic amines with outstanding activity by employing formic acid as hydrogen donor under mild conditions. The catalytic activity of the heterogeneous catalyst showed no significant loss after five continuous use.

Using green chemical method a series of fifteen systematically substituted 3-(9-substituted anthracen-10-yl)-1-(4-phenyl substituted)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives having high nonlinear absorption coefficient have been synthesized. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were studied using nanosecond pulses at 532 nm wavelength. All 15 derivatives are found to show high nonlinear absorption in the range of 35-640 cm/GW. Among these the derivatives with-NO2 as one of the substitution group show higher nonlinear absorption. The origin of high nonlinear absorption with low linear absorption in the compounds has been attributed to two-step two-photon absorption process. We have shown that the energy bands of these compounds are distributed such that for excitation at 532 nm they have strong nonlinear absorption. These properties of the reported compounds make them a potential candidate for biological imaging and other applications which are based on nonlinear absorption. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. On water catalytic aldol reaction catalyzed by polyetheramine (D230) has been developed for easy access to 3-substituted 3-hydroxyindolin-2-ones through the reaction between various substituted isatins and acetophenones/cyclic ketones in high yields under room temperature. Systematic mechanism investigation uncovers the secret for the on water catalytic aldol reaction: comparison of the heterogeneous and homogeneous reaction circumstances with yields of 95 and 20%, respectively, indicates the on-water reaction dominating; interfacial hydrogen bonding between isatin with H2O is tested based on the downfield shift of the C2 and C3’s C-13 NMR signals when water was added to the CDCl3 solution of isatin; Lewis base polyetheramine D230 catalyzes the aldol reaction via the enamine mechanism verified by in situ NMR and ESI-MS analysis.

A titanium.IV) oxide photocatalyst modified with 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN/TiO2) responds to visible light, and electrons are photogenerated to the conduction band of TiO2 under light irradiation in the presence of a suitable hole scavenger. The reducing potential of DHN/TiO2 was applied for photocatalytic conversion of a nitro group to an amino group of aromatics having other reducible groups under hydrogenfree and noble metal-free conditions at room temperature. Various nitro aromatics having vinyl, chloro, bromo, and acetyl groups were converted to amino aromatics with high yields with the reducible groups being preserved. Some parameters affecting the catalytic performance were investigated, and the reaction rate was almost determined by the amount of the substrate adsorbed on DHN/TiO2.

Designing and fabricating catalysts with highly dispersed metal nanoclusters (NCs) is very crucial for achieving high activity and selectivity. In this work, all-alkynyl-protected [Ag-74(C CPh)(44)](NO3)(2) cluster (Ag duster) with a well-defined structure was firstly intercalated in alpha-zirconium phosphate (alpha-ZrP) through ion-exchange. Then the atomically precise Ag cluster can be immobilized robustly in the support by a sequential process of carbonization, calcination and reduction. The supported Ag duster showed the relatively high catalytic activity (TOP = 222.9-445.8 h(-1)) and excellent recyclability for hydrogenation of a variety of nitroaromatics, as well as the compounds with carbon-carbon double bonds even if the loading of Ag was as low as 0.72 wt.%. Zirconium pyrophosphate acts as not only a stabilizer of Ag duster through a spatial confinement, but also an adsorption site for nitroaromatics. The residual carbon arisen from thermal decomposition of all-alkynyl ligand coordinating on Ag cluster exerted an important role in protecting Ag duster from sintering. As a result, the intercalation of Ag cluster in the interlayer region is a promising strategy for extending their potential applications in catalysis.

An iridium-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes to access a series of substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives in excellent yields is disclosed. This transformation is distinguished with water-soluble and air-stable iridium complexes as the catalyst, formic acid as the hydrogen source, mild reaction conditions, and broad functional group compatibility. Most importantly, a tentative chiral N,N-chelated Cp*Ir(III) complex-catalyzed enantioselective transfer hydrogenation is also presented, affording chiral products in excellent yields and good enantioselectivities.
