Preparation of 2,2-disubstituted and 2-monosubstituted alkenylboronic acid esters from aliphatic and aromatic ketones and aldehydes by the boron-Wittig olefination with bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methane was examined and applied on the multigram scale. The influence of the substrate steric and electronic features on the overall efficiency and stereochemical outcome of the reaction was studied. Additionally, a series of diversely functionalized (hetera)cycloalkylidenemethyl and (hetera)cycloalkyl boronic acid-derived building blocks was synthesized.

A new diamine bearing flexible ether, rigid pyridine, and bulky anthrone pendent group, 10,10-bis[4-(4-amino-2-pyridinoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone (BAPPA), was prepared in three steps from anthrone. BAPPA was reacted with six conventional aromatic dianhydrides in N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to form the corresponding new poly(ether imide)s (PEIs) via the poly(ether amic acid) (PEAA) precursors with inherent viscosities ranging from 0.85 dL g(-1) to 1.26 dL g(-1) and thermal imidization. All the PEAAs could be cast from DMAc solution and thermally converted into transparent, flexible, and tough PEI films with tensile strength of 72.2-112.4 MPa, tensile modulus of 1.8-2.1 GPa, and elongation at break of 10-18%. These PEIs were predominantly amorphous and displayed excellent thermal stability with the glass transition temperature of 290-388 degrees C, the 5% weight loss temperature of 480-514 degrees C, and the residue of 68-43% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. The PEIs derived from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride and 4,4 ‘-hexafluoroisopropylidenediphathalic anhydride exhibited excellent solubility in organic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, DMAc, N, N-dimethylformamide, pyridine, and even in tetrahydrofuran. Meanwhile, these PEIs also exhibited high optical transparency with the ultraviolet cutoff wavelength in the 374-427 nm range and the wavelength of 80% transparency in the range of 468-493 nm.

A concise, one-pot route to oxazoles and furocoumarins has been reported. The key step in this transformation involves in situ generation of N-acyliminium ion (NAI) precursor under catalyst and solvent-free conditions and their further transformations promoted by superacid in the same pot. We have also presented the experimental evidence for the involvement of proto-solvated novel exocyclic N-acyliminium ion. Further, the UV-visible and fluorescence studies revealed that few of the compounds reported here exhibited emission of blue light upon irradiation in EtOH in the region of 404-422 nm.

The binuclear ruthenium(II) p-cymene complexes containing Schiff base ligands of general composition [(Ru(p-cymene)Cl)(2)L1-6] (1-6) have been synthesized. The complexes were characterized by analytical and spectral (FT-IR, UV-Vis & H-1 NMR) methods. The molecular structure of the representative complex [(Ru(p-cymene)Cl)(2)(L-6)] (6) was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Further, these half-sandwich ruthenium complexes are active catalysts for the mild hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aromatic anilines in the presence of NaBH4 in ethanol. Hydrothermal carbonization of salep as a domestic biosource was carried out to afford a biochar, BC, with exceptional catalytic activity. BC can be further magnetized by incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles to furnish a magnetic catalyst, BC-Fe, with improved recovery and recyclability for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes in the absence of any precious metal. BC-Fe was also applied as a catalyst support for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles and development of an efficient, biocompatible and cost-effective catalyst, Pd@BC-Fe, with utility for the oxidation of benzyl alcohols under mild reaction condition in a selective manner to afford corresponding acids in high yields. The study of the recyclability of the catalyst confirmed high recyclability of Pd@BC-Fe.

Herein, we demonstrate an efficient protocol for transfer hydrogenation of ketones using methanol as practical and useful liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) under Ir(III) catalysis. Various ketones, including electron-rich/electron-poor aromatic ketones, heteroaromatic and aliphatic ketones, have been efficiently reduced into their corresponding alcohols. Chemoselective reduction of ketones was established in the presence of various other reducible functional groups under mild conditions.

Site-specific functionalization of sp3 C-H bonds adjacent to a nitrogen atom is one of the unexplored heterogeneous transformations. Aiming at alpha-arylation of glycine derivative for rapid access to indolylglycines without the aid of bases, a chemically robust and two-dimensional COF is prepared. Integration of [2,2 ‘]bipyridyl (Bpy) unit benefits active homogeneous complex Ru(Bpy)22+ to anchor over the framework backbone to devise Ru-COF that acts as unprecedented visible light photocatalyst towards cross-dehydrogenative coupling of secondary amines with indoles in excellent yield at room temperature, under aerobic condition. Ru-COF shows admirable reusability and superior activity to that of Ru(Bpy)3Cl2, while substrate variation studies delineate wide ranges of functional group tolerance. To the best of Ru-COF, atom-economic C-H functionalization is realized as iminium ion is in situ generated. The photocatalytic route is detailed from astute modulation of optical band-gap in light of density-functional theory studies and experimental results, which validates single-electron-transfer pathway.

There has been a great deal of attention to the development of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts for the selective and mild hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines. Herein, a biomass-derived carbon material supported Ni catalyst (Ni/C) was facilely prepared by a one-pot pyrolysis process, and the as-prepared Ni/C catalyst demonstrated a high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines at room temperature. The Ni/C catalyst not only demonstrated a high catalytic activity but also showed a good tolerance to other functional groups. Structurally diverse primary amines were achieved in yields from 92% to 99% within a few hours at room temperature under 5 bar H-2. Furthermore, the Ni/C catalyst showed good reusability without the loss of its activity.

With an intention of identifying chalcone derivatives exhibiting anti-protozoal activity, a cohort of relatively unexplored arylpyrrole-based chalcone derivatives were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The resultant compounds were evaluated in vitro for their potential activity against a cultured Trypanosoma brucei brucei 427 strain. Several compounds displayed mostly modest in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity with compounds 10e and 10h emerging as active candidates with IC50 values of 4.09 and 5.11 mu M, respectively. More importantly, a concomitant assessment of their activity against a human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cell line revealed that these compounds are non-toxic.
